Pongee Recycled Clothing

Sweet little shop and lovely, friendly owner. Nice selection of vintage and classic items. Very good selection of jewelry and accessories. We ended up there late in a long day of shopping so I was out of steam but will be back to do some serious digging when I am fresh!

As the name suggests Pongee stocks more recylced clothing (from the last 20 years) than vintage, though they do have some vintage items. The jewellery was stand out with some really unique earrings available. There were also some cool jackets for sale for around $ 50.

I am partial to a bit of tongue in cheek humour and when setting trends why not make the uncool cool? (provided you can do so) the selection of vintage get up here isn’t as vast as some stores– such as Hey Joe, but it maximises the space it has with a few pearls amidst a sea of potential.
I had a quick fly by on my way through and while not completely sold on anything, have left this door open as one I shall return to.

I always find it slightly amusing when a store’s name doesn’t exactly fit their description of business. Pongee is a soft, thin woven cloth from Indian silk, and conjures up images of whimsical dress-​up garments just ready for you to float away in. In terms of second-​hand stores, I wouldn’t say Pongee is vintage, and I certainly don’t feel too whimsical upon entering the store. They do, however, stock an okay range of second-​hand clothing, hence the term «recycled» rather than «vintage».
If it wasn’t for the bright signage out on Queen Street, you’d probably walk straight past this place. The store is rather pokey, with not too much room to move amongst the racks and displays of clothing and jewellery. I’m not as fond of the lady who works here as I am with staff at Fi & Co or Lick. I truly believe a second-​hand shop gets the majority of its personality from the staff who work there and can find the perfect gem for you. Unfortunately, I don’t ever really find much I like in this store and it lacks the vibrancy and quirky character of Fremantle’s other vintage shops. It’s not that the store stocks poor quality clothing, nor is there anything particularly wrong with it, just a bit «meh».
It’s worth a gander if you’re in the area, but nothing to wave some sparklers around about.
