Pie and coffee were so bad we couldn’t finish either of them. Would not go back here for a free meal.

As you’ve probably already read, Culley’s is an old Freo institution. A place where you’d expect to find traditionally baked breads and cakes, made from recipes passed down the generations. Recipes that have stood the test of time because these bakers have their methods down-pat. I wanted to love you Culley’s but two weeks in a row have I found the pastries limp and the cupcakes stodgy. I’d honestly put them on par with the bakes you can buy at the Woolworths bakery section… maybe even inferior, sorry. The sausage rolls and spinach and ricotta rolls were no better. The pastry is a very thin layer and average quality.

Old school Freo institution with a reasonably priced café(really good burgers!!) and good takeaway rolls, sandwiches and cakes.

Love this place; that’s three words you’ll say to anybody and everybody if you’ve ever been here. Everytime I’m in Freo, I get my lunch at Cully’s, which usualy consits of a pie or pasty and a caramel slice(I must admit I’m addicted to those slices). The steak pies are the best, loaded with fantastic gravy. The aformetioned slice is rich with a slightly crispy base. Mmm. If you are ever in town, don’t even considere the other eateries.

This place is always busy insude and out and why not. It always has some welcoming selection of pastries in the window, the long interior feels warm and homely and surprisingly small. Culleys is much bigger than most coffee shop/cafes in Freo but it still feels country. It reminds me of lunch options in the UK only here its a niche market of sorts, all glutenous starchy bready goodness. There is a hot food option too, away from the bakery temptations, full of comforting burgers, chips and soups. It is definitely not modern or alternative but just honest home baked goodness.

If you need to read a review of this place, you probably don’t get to Fremantle very often as this bakery is somewhat of a local institution. They make great pies(my personal favourite is their Pepper Steak), rolls and a wide variety of bakery-type treats. I’m not a huge fan of their rolls, both because they are a bit overzealous with their use of carrot and because the pie warmer is so alluring. Of their cakes, I thoroughly recommend their vanilla and caramel slices, both are of a good size and not too sweet. They have tables inside, but to best enjoy this place, grab a magazine from across the mall, get your food and head for their shady tables in the mall.

This place is really quite charming, in walking past I couldn’t help but be drawn in by the old school vibe and the black and white tiled floor. I love Fremantle for its quirky little cafes and boutiques, and this place fits right in. It looks a little like an American diner, but then again has the vibes of a little French coffee shop. The coffee and cakes sold here are delicious, and the service is always with a smile. This is one coffee shop not to be missed!

Cully’s Tea Rooms is a Fremantle institution that has been run by the same family for almost 90 years. Situated in the arcade off High Street Cully’s has a sit down café section and a take away bakery and patisserie side. The food is outstanding — with several award winning items such as the sausage rolls and pasties, and in terms of sweets the vanilla slice is probably the best in Perth. There has been a recent refurbish and décor and feel of the joint is much improved which was probably the only thing letting Cully’s down before. I was always brought here as a kid whenever our family was in Freo and the quality hasn’t changed in nearly twenty years. A must for bakery fans.
