On a warm winters Sunday this place had a steady stream of customers ordering fresh and tasty fish and chips. I shared a serve as a hangover cure, dipped in tartare sauce which I think is home made. If the tables are full you can walk a few steps and plonk yourself down on the grassy area in front of the beach. Five stars for salty goodness at a top location.

This was one of the best beach side fish and chips experiences I have ever had. The flathead was moist and tender with a nice thin batter and well made tartare. Sitting on the beach eating and relaxing — is there really a more enjoyable sunny Saturday afternoon? Crowded by not noisy, secluded but spacious and that’s just the location combine this with the fish and you have a lasting memory.

There’s more to Chish and Fips than its witty name. The geniuses who first opened this shop were really onto something, cashing in on that unexplainable yearning for fish and chips one has when at the beach. Whether it’s the ‘I was so close I could have caught it with my mouth’ ocean encounters we have, or simply that the salty salty sea water fills us with cravings for more salty salty things, Chish & Fips has hooked on to a great idea. On the grassy knoll of Coogee Beach, this take-away store has a constant line and its tables are almost always full. The fish and chips are fresh and delicious, the calamari is great and the burgers are good too. Actually, to be honest, I don’t know if the food is fantastic or if it’s just the symbiotic relationship Chish & Fips has with the beach. It might sound like I’m not saying much about Chish & Fips, but really there’s not too much to say. It’s a fish and chips shop that pretty much sits on the beach. That’s all you need to know.
