Come for the Friday and Saturday fresh shucked oysters starting at 4:30pm! Prices can’t be beat for fresh oysters and two versions to choose from. They also have really good seafood chowder. The fried prawns were good. The salt and pepper squid was not that spectacular so I would say skip that.

We’re spoilt for choice for great fresh seafood in SA, but inside the city limits this place really is the standout. All the majors are here: whiting, garfish, flathead, tuna etc, usually with the choice of fillets or whole fish. Some more obscure treats are to be found here and the octopus often finds it’s way into my basket.
The real differentiator for me though is the skin on salmon which can sometimes be hard to find elsewhere.
Samtass in the central markets: buy fish there.

Samtass is situated on Gouger St, but follows through into the markets.
It is a fairly decent sized store with a good range of seafood. Whole and fillet fish, prawns, muscles, oysters and the odd crayfish or two.
Everything is kept icy cold and fresh. In addition to the fresh produce, Samtass also preprepare party platters which can be handy.

Straight from the High Seas, Samtass Seafood brings freshly caught (mainly) seafood straight to the store windows ready for your travel esky!
Most of the options you can find at any of the other fish mongers in the markets, however they often stock Giant Crabs, that not only taste great, but also look really cool. The other big positive is the Oyster bar on the Gouger Street side of the shop. Feel like a dozen fresh and natural? Jump on to a bar stool and dig in. Unfortunately, no beer… no…beer.

Whenever I am shopping at the Central Markets I come here for my seafood. Everything is fresh and well presented. You can find many varieties of fish as well as a good selection of shell fish and pre prepared seafood.
As well as buying fresh fish here I love their marinara mix. It is filled with quality seafood and doesn’t scrimp on salmon, prawns and scallops. I also like to buy their prawn and salmon shaslicks with flavours such as the traditional garlic marinade to a more spicy thai marinade.
Tanks of live shellfish line one wall and you can always buy seafood to eat– in or take away if you are feeling peckish.
The service is great and the seafood is fresh.
