I’ve been here many times over the years, haha. never really checked in though. Thought i should share my review again. Normally, i will ordered singapore laksa whereas my wife will try something else. Today she ordered Hainan chicken rice. If you’ve never dined here before, when the laksa comes you will probably think you’ve been ripped off judging by the size of the bowl that the laksa came in. But really you are not. The portion is filled to the brim, and then the ingredients they have in there are in good portion to the noodles. Once you’ve eaten the whole bowl of laksa, you wouldn’t feel that short changed. ;) Another thing to note is the name of the laksa. It’s not quite the Singapore laksa flavored soup but it’s fairly similar .But it’s good laksa either way. I don’t think they are using prawn paste soup base(meaning it’s chicken soup) but the chilli paste they are using is probably balachan chilli(malaysian prawn paste chilli) which is probably why it tasted a bit like the laksa i knew. The overall taste of the soup tends to be a bit towards salty. If you pay $ 3 more, you can get the seafood laksa, but i would suggest otherwise. I had a chance to try a few pieces of the chicken from my wife’s food. I would say they taste alright, not overly dry, but not juicy tender either. It’s boneless alright(the Hainan chicken rice i knew is supposed to strip the bones off anyway). On the whole i felt their chicken rice has nothing to shout about. I would suggest you try Ricky’s if you love chicken rice. You have to grab the drinks of your choice from the fridge yourself. The prices set are regular enough. There’s a few choices(Yeo’s drinks. Truly south east asia sia ~) there that you wouldn’t normally find in many restaurants. I tend to visit the this place once in a few months.

Hmm. I heard that this place is quite good so visited in a Saturday lunch and ordered a laksa. Half way through eating what is probably the strangest laksa I’ve had in my life, the owner came up and asked how it was. I said it was good, so he told me they use dairy milk rather than coconut milk«because it’s healthier». Not for me buddy. Dairy milk gives me acid attacks. Thanks for not putting that on the menu. Beware if you’re lactose intolerant. My partners noodles were also nothing to write home to mum about.

I really don’t know why I have never tried Asian Gourmet until now. I have walked past a million times on my weekly market visits. I guess that is totally bad of me as an Adelaidian. It seems like this place has been a gem for many years. Specialising in Malaysian cuisine, what you will find here is cheap tasty eats. Noodles & Laksa are the house faves. It’s generally what I see everyone eating here. The restaurant set up is kind of old and messy. But I guess it is more of a quick eat for lunch type of place. Going with the chefs recommendation, I went for the Fried Mee Hoon with vermicelli noodles. Great option for those who are gluten intolerant. All noodle dishes and laksa can be made with vermicelli noodles. The dish was made fast, so if you are in a rush this is a good spot. Nice smoky wok flavour though the noodles, fresh chicken and bbq pork. Although frozen style prawns were tossed through. I really only like fresh prawns, so that was a bit disappointing. But, the dish was good overall. Look, this is not my favourite place for food in the markets. But a good option if want to avoid the food halls, get something fast and cheap!

So this place is known for it’s laksa. I’d call it a ‘gateway laksa experience’. It’s not quiet as china town flavoured as I would usually go for but it’s a good start into the Asian soup world. Go the combo Singapore with extra veg as it gives the dish more flavour and interest. This with a drink will set you back about $ 15. The other dishes look pretty good but I am yet to try. The entrees are pretty limited– there’s four options including the good old spring roll and dim sim. Food comes out quick and there is a fast turnover of tables. Don’t think it’s licensed.

Great feed guaranteed! Small venue with inside & market side eating! Get in early or wait to be seated — worth the wait. Value for money!

This place has been around ‘forever’ it seems and it’s understandable. Specialising in Malaysian styled dishes at good prices, there’s no wonder they keep going and going. I love the Nonya Curry Chicken(Boneless) as it’s just a tasty rich curry that’s not very spicy for those that like it on the mild side.

Asian Gourmet is a well regarded restaurant in Adelaide Markets specializing in Malaysian and Chinese Cuisine. A wonderful place to dine amongst the buzz of the markets. Although there is seating options available inside, I much prefer to grab a table out amongst the mayhem. Asian Gourmet is known for its Laksa. The texture and flavour of the Laksa on offer here is quite different to what you will find in most other restaurants. I am unsure as to whether this is a Thai/Malaysian difference or just how they do it here. Either way, it is good and considered by some to be the best in town. In my opinion it has a hint of punpkin to it, but perhaps that is just me.

I can’t handle spice. I’ve been called a wuss, a loser and told that if i kept at it, I could really improve. Asian Gourmet in the Adelaide Central Markets is the only place that has really eased me into enjoyable spice eating. Known for its Singapore laksa at $ 8.90, when I asked for no/little spice they were one of the rare establishments that actually listened to me. It. Was. Delicious. The basic décor is no reflection of the flavour and Asian Gourmet is one of those places that attracts a loyal regular crowd because of its consistency in large meal sizes and taste. Asian Gourmet is amazingly priced, the food is incredibly tasty and every time you visit the Adelaide markets it will probably be where you head for lunch.

As my daughter recently said to me «the dingier the Chinese restaurant the better it is»: Well this place certainly fits this description. What it lacks in aesthetic appeal it makes up for in value for money. The name takes a bit of artistic licence as the food is anything but gourmet but it is edible. It is cheap and cheery and always pretty busy, especially on Fridays and Saturdays when there can be a bit of a wait for a table. I have eaten here many a time and I stick to the stir fried vegetables as meat in these places always scares me a little. The serves are generous so you don’t leave feeling hungry and most dishes are around $ 10. There are certainly many better Chinese restaurants around the Markets but the advantage of this one is that it is within the main building so you don’t have to venture very far if your feet are tired.
