Last night I was very fortunate enough to go to the Rhino Room to support one of my best buddies on his second open-mic night. Did you know that every Monday the Rhino Room does an open-mic night? Anyone can have an attempt at their stand up routine if they bring along three paying audience members at $ 10 per person. I am really sad that I did not know about this before. I would have been hanging out at the Rhino Room a lot more if I knew this earlier. Also, in saying that, if you are bored on a Monday night, go down for $ 10 worth of awesome local comedy. It is a great way to support locals who are testing out their material in a very comfortable and encouraging environment. The set that I watched last night was really awesome. There were some really talented newbies. It was great to watch them learn how to work the crowd. I will definitely be back to continue supporting them in the future. There is something about the Rhino Room. It is really cosy and intimate with the audience. Featuring classic velvet red stage curtains and some really cool and funky art painted on the walls. It is also available for hire for functions. Would be a cool place for a birthday or work function. I read a sign that said free room hire with bar tab of $ 1500. That is pretty decent these days. The bar stocks a good selection of beverages, including a couple of craft beers. This venue is renowned as one of the favs for travelling comedians and artists when they reach Adelaide. I read somewhere that Greg Fleet in particular really loved it. So, it is really worth keeping an eye on the acts on the Adelaide Central or Rhino Room website to see what is coming up. Or just come down for a good way to wind down after a hectic Monday!

The Rhino Room is THE place for comedy in Adelaide. But it’s not JUST for comedy either. Most nights of the week you can catch stand up gigs here, and during Fringe, the late show is the place to be in the early hours of the morning BUT on weekends there’s often live music or a DJ helping the party to kick on until the sun comes up. Prices are super reasonable, with a tenner usually getting you entry to what ever fantastical event is happening through the doors and up the stairs of this purple building. It’s not fancy — but as usual, that’s a good thing, a great thing in fact. Make sure you check out the Rhino Room and see what’s happening next time you complain that there’s «nothing to do in Adelaide» — because that’s not true, and you need to stop fooling yourself — mkay?

Always fun and always friendly. Great comedy line ups and great shows during Fringe. They’ve also got one of the funkiest venues I’ve ever seen for a comedy room. It’s quirky décor and fun little beer garden, the upstairs room and the Howling Owl have a relaxed vibe perfect for comedy. Bar staff are always cheery and not pricks which make me all the more inclined to pop back in when I’m in town.

I love Rhinos and I also love rooms. Naturally, the Rhino room would be somewhere I’d end up — and I come back to — often. With the abundance of Rhinos and freaky hoodie wearing koalas, the Rhino Room is primarily known as Adelaide’s premier stand up comedy club. Big comics such as Wil Anderson and Greg Fleet have said that the Rhino Room is the best room in Australia and even the world. It hosts comedy on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights and often has live music upstairs and downstairs on Friday and Saturday nights. Attached to the Urban cow studio gallery, art often spills into the room, giving it a funky urban atmosphere. I’ve had such great nights at this venue, especially over New Years Eve and Adelaide Fringe, where it hosts some of the best acts of the Fringe and has a late show which starts at 11:30, finishes about 2 am and features some of the best local and international acts. Fun, Friendly and freaking funny, the Rhino Room entertains nearly every day of the week.

Although this place can be difficult to find for the first time, the huge rhino on the sidewall generally seems to help. This unique bar is a hot spot for comedy gigs, bands and general partying, but I am going to tell you about hiring this place out for events. My boyfriend recently celebrated his 21st at the Rhino Room and I was thoroughly impressed with everything. Having been let down by another venue only weeks prior to the event, we thought we’d try this place after a high recommendation from a friend. Mick helped us out with the booking and was fantastic, detailing the party around our wants and needs. We could bring our own food platters, decorations and they even had facilities to play a dvd of photos we had made. The cost of hiring the downstairs area(including a bar, music station, and outside section) was very affordable and we negotiated drink prices and a tab, which stretched out the entire night. The bar staff were friendly and fun, lining us complimentary shots on our arrival as a present to the birthday boy. Everyone enjoyed the venue and had a great night. Rhino room is very cultured and down to earth. Love it!

My favourite aspect of the Rhino Room is the free comedy. On certain nights they’ll have some free, amateur stand-up comedy. If you’re a real fan of stand-up, you’ll know that it’s the finest form of comic entertainment. It takes courage, cleverness and(come on, come one; think of another ‘c’ word) and performanCe(nailed it) to own the room. It isn’t easy. I’ve never taken the stage myself. Not through any sort of cowardice, of course, but through a sort of obligatory mercy. You see, were I to expose the Rhino Room to my brilliance, the audience would remain forever climatised to a level a quality that simply cannot be matched by anyone else. So I remain a dutiful audience member. And functions are very gay(in the original meaning of the word) too. The area’s small, and music too loud for discourse, but there’s a nice little outside area. Although, it’s often filled with the aroma of marijuana. So if you’re ethically opposed the the smoking of the herb, but you really, really MUST exist in an outside area, you might want to avoid the Rhino Room.

Rhino Room is a grungy urban venue housed within a multileveled converted warhouse on Frome St in the City. A grafiti style mural by Melbourne based street artist Mike«Makatron» Maka, depicting a giant rhinoscerous with a city upon its back graces the front wall of the purple toned building. Inside, the lower level consists of a funky little bar along with a walled outside area which acts as a beer garden and smoking area. The industrial feel prevails in this outside area which feels as though is is part of a partially constucted or partially demolished abandoned bulding. The live music and comedy venue is upstairs. This portion of the bulding is split into two sections by the stairwell, the first(to your right) is a pokey little bar which gets super crowded between sets. The second(to your left) is quite a spacious performance area with a slightly elevated stage. There is a small seating area at the the back but, at least when the music is on, you are otherwise standing. My favourite memory of the Rhino Room comes from many years ago. It was the final performance of, in my opinion, the best band to come out of Adelaide during the 1990’s, Pornland. The, multi piece Funk Parody Band, complete with overweight, bearded, long haired and jump suit attired lead singer brought the house down skulling vodka out the bottle and pahing girls from the audience mid set. Although I don’t know if you can get away with such shinanigans in the modern era, I have sill certainly seen a number great acts at the rhino room over the past few years and look forward to seeing more in the future.

I’ve been to the Rhino Room a few times for some comedy shows and a birthday party before. The large rhinoceros painted on the side of the building certainly makes it easy to find. Interesting little club, with unique art and interior design throughout. They run an open mic night for budding comedians every Monday, and host some more renown comedians on Thursday and Friday nights. The also often play host to local bands, and occasionally international gigs. I’d suggest popping in some time to witness the comedic talent Adelaide has to offer.

Over the last decade or so I have seen the Rhino Room evolve into a regular drop in centre for many traveling comedians, and a second home for local bands and open mic performers. The homely environment it offers and strong network it has built around it, has helped build a fantastic hub for artists and fans. Rhino Room is also a supporting venue for visual artists as a gallery space, and back entrance to the Urban Cow Studio situated right next door. If stand up comedy, local music or visual art isn’t really your thing, then book the room yourself for a private function and invite your own friends — It’s your night, and a great place to hang out with people you like. Plus the introduction of the downstairs bar, courtyard area, and regular themed parties, It now offers more opportunities to mingle and party on until the wee hours of the morning. There’s a giant rhino painted on the side of the building, so you can’t miss it!
