I don’t know whether it is a good thing or something I should be ashamed of, but I really like Heaven. Thursday night Beer Pong at Heaven is fun and has been every time I have been. The first time I went, I was surprised at how huge the place actually is. There is the main room as you step in with a large bar down the side, then another room down the back with a separate bar that leads off into a really nice outdoor/beer garden area. Upstairs is yet another room which a HUGE dance floor, and a dancing girl always needs room to bust her moves. The drink specials on a Thursday are really good, $ 2 shots which go down very, very nicely. Their Beer Pong tournament is also a really good way to get your boyfriends and boy friends in as well, while you and your girls head off to dance the night away. Compared to similar places such as HQ it is definitely not as seedy, although be careful of the $ 20 entry fee on a Saturday… ouch!

When I first walked into the new Heaven I almost had a seizure from the light beams. They were super bright but cool, colourful and added to the club atmosphere. Heaven is cool when they’re hosting international as well as local acts and performers. Both DJ Havana Brown and Groove Terminator have played here before. So for those who don’t know, Heaven used to hold Notorious, and HQ used to be Heaven. I actually don’t find a lot of difference between Notorious and the new Heaven. Same interior, probably same crowd with the exact same people(myself, for example), the only thing that’s changed is the entry fee and the security level. Boy, were they thorough — photograph and identity scan for some. Ignore the pretentious girls with too much eyeliner knocking your drink all over your dress while they hug and scream it out on the dance floor, and guys who smell somewhere between a dead water buffalo and like they bathed in Davidoff or Polo Ralph Lauren. If you want a mildly good time, focus on the beautiful bright lights, drink up and don’t stop.

Heaven is one of those places that by time you even read this review the fad has passed or perhaps returned again. In this sense it is a bit like Keeping Up With The Kardashians, and I guess those most likely to be keeping up as such are 18 – 20 years old. Heaven is a nightclub built in what was once a sacred church, however I doubt you will find any angles here. In hindsight its location is also rather trivial given that this is the city of churches, but I guess it is not the first holly ground in Adelaide to be transformed this way. Like most nightclubs, Heaven as mentioned has more of a young group of followers, which lets face it, is fair enough. In terms of setting it is home to a pretty decent scene with a substantial amount of size for its kids to enjoy. There are three predominant dance floors and Djs playing a variety of club content. Down stairs you will find a bit of a mix between dance classics and smooth r&b, while upstairs is home to your typical dance/trance club scene. Although slightly offensive to some, the upper level in particular is a beautiful club dream with the upper church point giving character to the dance floor. The mosaic style windows reflect colour, which is further club-itized with neon blue beams of light streaming though the core. It is probably also worth mentioning that Heaven works as a bit of a venue for various shows, and so if Adelaide is going to be blessed(no pun intended) with a world renown DJ, they are likely to display their talents here. For instance DJ Havana Brown has played for kicks at Heaven a couple times now. In such a case expect Heavens already pricey twenty-dollar door charge to increase, as well as a cue that will make you want to slit your wrists.

Heaven’s glory days finished when the Bikies got too big for their boots again. For all you youngsters who never had the privilege of hitting up Notorious(underage disco thing held at Heaven) you may not know that HQ premises used to house Heaven. Not really sure why they’ve re opened Heaven. it’s almost as if they were targeting the same market they had when they were a pumping club back in the 90’s. except I think maybe those people are a bit over the club scene now guys… I remember the opening night of Heaven, now situated in what used to be St Paul’s on Pultney st. It’s a great big venue with 4 bars or something and this cool churchy feel upstairs, so points up for the décor, its awesome. However, that first night I wasn’t even allowed in(this could have had something to do with me being escorted by Red Square security, honestly who wants to let them in? oh the shame.) the dress code is reasonably strict, something about no brand names, which is ridiculous — this is Adelaide, take what you can get. I don’t know, if you like queuing for what seems like years, getting patted down with a metal detector thing and then paying $ 20 only to walk in and find the place half empty… well then go for it. I’m genuinely surprised it’s still open.
