This historic restaurant is in the old soup kitchen in the Suleymaniye Mosque. It’s a very large space that is reminiscent of a Communist kitchen. It’s very bare and sterile, but the food is good! They have just traditional Turkish food, but it’s great. Warning: Do not order the«ayran.» it’s a traditional yogurt drink and is an acquired taste.

I came across this quiet hidden place after wondering out of the mosque. Those tourist restaurants are selling eight lira lunch set and are packed. I turned back and did not regret. The signature soup is made by red lentils and tastes just right with baguette. The eggplant with tomato sauce is fairly delicious. The signature dish is meatball, which has pistachios and walnuts in it. There could be some sauce or paste to go with the meatball so it does not taste so dry. The dishes are sophisticated in general. But I only hope there weren’t three flies dancing around my table…
