Am I actually recommending that you have a slightly overpriced, middling cocktail at a touristy hotel bar atop Singapore’s ugliest building — and that it’s worth it?! (For better or worse, Marina Bay Sands is Singapore’s most *distinctive* building.) Take the impressively speedy elevator up to the 57th floor. Steal a peek at the famous infinity pool(the highest and largest in the world) — but, that’s for hotel guests only. Instead, head for the Flight Bar on the same floor. I ended up at Flight Bar twice in one weekend — which should indicate something, since I don’t usually love paying a premium for touristy fluff. But that view, that view! Daytime or night — especially night — the view from the very top of the«surfboard» is breathtaking. In Hong Kong afterward, I was stupefied by how short and dull Hong Kong’s skyline felt in comparison. Even though we visited during Grand Prix weekend, it wasn’t crowded at all — afternoon, sunset, or nighttime. The outdoor deck wraps around and is cool and airy, the indoor spaces are loungey and pleasant. Service is attentive, but not exactly white glove, in a good way. Dress code is surprisingly lax. Drinks here were not especially good — all the cocktails we tried were of the sweet, tropical variety with barely any taste of alcohol — but consider the SG$ 24 an admissions price for a glamorous open-air view of all of Singapore, and about a million photo ops. Get yourself a Singapore Sling and enjoy this surreal scene of an amazing city. To the friendly bartender from New Mexico named Lucas — hi!
