The sign across the middle of the road, drawing your attention to this pub, is something I have never seen before. Its a nice pub with lots of different rooms, but can get quite cramped! Must have been horrible when it was being used to house wounded soldiers during the English civil war. Yes it is that old! Fairytale of New York from Kelham Island was a decent dark beer and not too strong at a safe but tasty 4.2pc

I like this pub due to it’s history and charm, but the service leaves a lot to be desired. I was stood at the bar waiting to be served and there was only two of us waiting yet two out of the three staff behind the bar seemed to be doing very little. It’s always busy so you’ll do well to get a seat.

The oldest pub in York possibly dating to the 16th century. It was used as a billet hospital and morgue by the Roundheads in 1644 during the Siege of York much to the chagrin of the innkeeper who was a staunch royalist! By all accounts the fireplace probably dates from this period and is still used today. It is accessed down a little ginnel but is easy to find thanks to a sign which stretches across Stonegate, an interesting feature in itself. Within there is a main bar area and two or three other rooms so there are plenty of nooks and crannies to find yourself a table. When we visited there were seven cask beers on, we chose Otter Bright which was a very pleasant pint. The staff are friendly and the place has a bustling and lively atmosphere. The food is reasonably priced with curry nights, steak nights etc. as well as a menu which has all the usual pub favourites on it. All in all a popular and friendly pub which is well worth a visit.

Received nothing but slow, impersonal service and quite frankly bland food. I also got hassled by an alcoholic who professed his sexual profanities at me and my mum at the top of his lungs and wouldn’t leave until he got bored of our cold treatment. He picked on us because we are Asian and hence ‘easy targets’. I had hoped the bar staff would’ve gotton rid of him before he made his way to us, but why would they? It was entertainment for them. I am a fan of history and culture/atmosphere which Britain has plenty to offer. I am also a fan of York in the above respects, but have never encountered much friendliness in York in general. This experience was just the icing on the cake. Shame. Will never go there again and telling all to family and friends.

When i go into town with my friends this is one of the places we like to go. The drinks are averagely priced and there is a nice warm and welcoming atmosphere. There are plently of places to sit both inside and out. It is hidden away for an alley so you will have to look out for that.

I’ve spent more long, boozy evenings in the Olde Starre than I could possibly count. It’s a wonderful place for a quiet evening with friends; there are so many different rooms and nooks and crannies that you can feel like you’re the only people there. Plus the staff are friendly, the drinks very reasonable and the outside area pleasant.

I love the Starr inne. I have spent many nights here enjoying good food, drink and music. The warm friendly atmosphere makes you feel very welcome and it is bigger than it looks from the outside with a few separate rooms and decent seating. It has a good outdoor area fairly sheltered if you are a smoker and good staff who serve quickly and are very helpful. We usually go in there meaning to stay for one drink and end up staying there all night because we enjoy it so much. We have had a few meals in there and they have all been very nice with a good variety offered. I can recommend the sausage and mash.

very ‘oldie-worldie’ ‘quaint’ style. The drinks are reasonably priced and the staff are very helpful. A good place to start a night with a quiet pint. all in all a very nice pub

The old star Inn on Stonegate is believed to be one of the pldest pubs in York, 1640. The Cellar was once used as an operating theatre for soldiers during the time of cromwell and apparently you are supposed to hear their screams as this is believed to be one of the many haunted places in york. Through the entrance is a Yard with a well in the middle, which at one time was the only source of fresh water for the area. The sign for the pub stretches accross the street above head height. although the pub is well set back off the street, you can’t miss the sign and once through the passage way and the courtyard you enter the pub, where they serve great food, traditional and Yorkshire. They do a great variety of beers including traditional hand pulled yorkshire ales. The view of the minster from the beer garden is amazing and not to be missed. well worth a visit on your tour around the City.
