We went to the restaurant at Middlethorpe hall yesterday. We started with a g and t on the Veranda over look the lovely gardens. The evening was warm the waiters took us through the menu and we soaked up the atmosphere, it was lovely. After a while we went through into the dining area it’s well appointed and the tables are distant enough to be enjoyable. Not like some restaurants where you are crammed in. The food is some of the best I have eaten in my life. It’s not cheap but then when you compare it to other venues the quality of what you get justifies the price. The duck I had, I think was £23 was the most succulent I have ever had and very flavoursome. The service is top quality, a great place to eat. You must do it at least once

Stayed at this hotel 3 weeks ago whilst attending a seminar in York. It has reasonably good standards and has many original features dating back to 1699. It used to be master cutler(from sheffield) residence. The rooms although nice, spacious and fully equiped are bit 80 ish in furnishings. This hotel also has a spa, which I did not try because I forgot my shorts. This would be a good venue for couples on a quiet couple of days away, although I was there on business, I noticed mostly couples were there. Lovely gardens.

Middlethorpe Hall can be found in the Bishopthorpe area of York, near the racecourse. It is a lovely, big hotel and was once a large, stately home type of house. Now it’s a hotel and spa with a restaurant. I have only ever been to the restaurant and into the gardens, so I can only really comment on those. The food in the restaurant was lovely, the starters and desserts were quite posh, but we went for Sunday lunch, so that was fairly traditional still, which I liked. The only thing I wasn’t happy with was the beef was undercooked and I had to ask them to cook it some more which they did. I thought for such a posh and expesive place they should have asked how we wanted our beef cooking, although I suppose I should have specified. The staff were very good too. The gardens are beautiful and very extensive; hotel guests and diners in the restaurant are allowed to stroll in them. On a nice day you can sit outside on the terrace with drinks before or after your meal. I know you can also book a function room in the hotel to have a private party in. I would imagine it’s very expensive though, as this is a rather posh place.
