Basically, they are awesome. We were in Whitstable for an oyster excursion and hopping from place to place when we spotted a young man shucking oysters and serving them to two tables plonked on the side of the harbour. They had a list on the wall of all the seafood they had and some prices. I wasn’t entirely convinced, but my dad who is much more intrepid than I, suggested we pull up a seat next to a man and his dogs. We managed to order a round of half dozen oysters and a half of new zealand mussels. It came to a blindingly cheap £4.20. Holy wow. Those were the cheapest, freshest and best oysters we had all day. The young man explained why, West Whelks is the wholesalers providing fish to the area. We decided to try some cockles and more mussels so ordered another round, £3.80, for those. Oh man, oh man, this is the stuff I live for. Sadly then they closed up shop for the day. I was gutted as was hoping for another dozen oysters. But I am so hoping to go there again. It’s a MUST if you are in Whitstable. A proper family run place, best value for money in town.
