This café has remained almost completely unchanged since the 1950’s, it’s not modern with a retro twist, it’s genuinely old fashioned, right down to the boiled hamburgers(yes, boiled) and Duralex glass wear. A comforting trip down memory lane if you’re old enough, if not you might be better off at the coffee shop in the art gallery on the other side of the building.

I believe this to be an underated café. The location is excellent, right on the beach(and not an overcrowded beach I might add) and easily accessable by foot or by car. It is one of those charming cafes that doen’t succomb to fads. I remember having milkshakes there when I was a kid and will often do the same now for old times sake.

Unlike some seaside cafes, the coffee here is really good although sadly they no longer serve the banoffee cheesecake(or maybe from a waistline point of view that’s a positive!) Parking is very near as are the loos. You have to pay for the parking by the hour. The café is the subject of a poem by the late Julia Darling which features on postcards and mugs together with a painting of the café by Emma Holliday. You can buy these at the café — there can’t be many beach cafes that offer such stylish souvenirs!

This is just what you expect from a seaside café. The Rendezous Café has been a part my visits to Whitley Bay for as long as I can remember. The marks of time show on the building itself, it’s a bit shabby and it only offers the basics but it’s a good old style sort of place and offers a decent cuppa. It looks out over the Bay and it’s a nice little haven no matter what the weather to just sit back and enjoy the views.

The Rendezvous Café is your traditional seaside café that could do with a new lick of paint and a smarten up, but it’s all part of it’s charm. In the winter you can have a brisk walk along the seafront and then relax with a nice cup of tea and watch people getting blown away outside. In the summer you can chill out with a 99 cone. Many of the staff are the same staff who served me when I was a kid so it has a lovely family theme to the place and can get quite popular in the summer. It’s just a nice place to relax, put your feet up and enjoy with wonderful views of the sea and beach outside.
