Tuesday night — is pub quiz night. And Harry the quizmaster is excellent. Like pub quizzes… you’ll love this. Not aggressively competitive, but the quality of the teams is startling at times.

Agree with other reviewers about the quality of the food, but it overlooks a dual carriageway, not the sand dunes, and it’s so popular that I’ve rarely seen it less than crowded with waiting times of up to 45 minutes. If the car park is full, then drive on!

An excellent local pub which benefits from its position on a popular part of the coastline. The staff are frienly and the toilets were spotless which I always use as a yardstick. We would recommend the pub particulary for an Sunday afternoon meal/drink or as a starting point for a night on the town.

This is a lovely pub whether you visit through the day or on an evening. It’s overlooks the sea and St Mary’s lighthouse is in full view. I would say it’s probably the most family orientated pub on the coast. There’s a wide variety of what I call everyday drinks and the prices are very reasonable. Try a meal there, they do lovely food which again is reasonably priced and always tasty. The staff are very nice and helpful and there is a good sized car park too. If your’e after a nice quiet drink or meal then try here it’s well worth a visit.

The Briardene my favourite pub in Whitley Bay by far. It’s not as close as the true ‘local’, which we walk past to get to it, but it is, in a sense, our local. Situated near St. Mary’s lighthouse and overlooking the dunes that lead down to the sea, the Briardene is perfect for families and nights out alike. With slow, relaxing music, it’s probably not best to come here for a party. The clientele tend to be families or elder people, or just couples and friends looking for a quiet drink. The drinks range is fairly wide, although don’t expect to get anything out of the ordinary. They do have an unusually wide selection of real ales at £2.20 a pint, a bargain in my opinion. The atmosphere inside the pub is relaxed and friendly and although there isn’t a beer garden, there is an outdoor seating area for smokers. It may be nippy but you are on the forefront of the Northumbrian coast. In summer, this outdoor seating area is fabulous. The staff are always friendly and attentive(and they ask you if you want ice in your drinks, for a change). The Briardene also does great food at a very reasonable price. We often go for sunday lunch which is top quality and far too much to eat.
