Discovering the Black Bull made our visit to Wetherby last week. Welcome was warm, bar was warm, food was excellent and lager was tip top. Will go back on next visit to the North for sure. Well worth a visit.

Have to say this was not the best experience I have ever had, should have been warned by the locals swearing outside. Sticky floor, dirty tables, Sky TV blaring so the landlord? had to ask twice what we wanted. More or less his exact phrase. I already wanted to leave but he had started pulling partner a pint, when I was offered my wine in a handled half pint glass with bright orange lipstick on the rim(apparently they had been busy) we declined and left. Probably not going to go back.!! Perhaps they were having an off day. This in no way relects on Wetherby which is a lovely shopping and eating out area.

As a thirteen year old girl(i am now 21) i used to do a bit of weekend work in this pub. and i have never hated anything so much! the landlord is a prevert. the landlady is rude, rough and in desperate need of some manners. it is dirty, it needs redecorating and all the staff need to learn some serious customer service skills. i worked behind the scenes washing up and was paid about £2.00 an hour. i have been back for a drink in this pub since being old enough to drink, and i have to say it is even worse than i remembered. it is actually a real let down to the lovely little town that is wetherby.

Visited this pub on 31st May 2008, pub itself seemed ok though nothing special(drunk rowdy locals at 7pm). Spent £1.00 on the quiz machine and won £4.50(deal or no deal), pressed collect and nothing happened so I went to the bar and said what happened, to be told ‘cant do anything about it, not our machine’(exact words). Bar person in question was a female 40ish dyed blode hair and very rude(didn’t even say sorry about that). I left it though I suppose I should have taken it further and would have done had it been more money. After 5 mins nothing had been done about the actual machine itself so I did go back to the bar and asked if they were going to put an ‘out of order’ sign on the machine to be told by the same person ‘don’t panic’. The pub looks fine from the outside but inside had sticky floors and décor needed updating. I will not be going back to this public house again or obviously recommending it to friends/family. I thought there was a big push these days to treat customers fairly… By the way, after having just the one pint my wife and myself left 15 mins later and the machine was still operating(I mean think of the profit now it didn’t have to pay out winnings)… We continued our evening in Wetherby and had a great time and lovely meal in another public house and will never visit the Black Bull again…

We’ve stopped off here twice for food now, before a long drive home from Harrogate. Right in the centre of the pretty North Yorkshire town of Wetherby, the Black Bull is a charming old double-fronted pub with parking nigh-on-impossible nearby. When you first walk in, it looks tiny … but as you get round to the bar, you realise it goes much deeper and has a cute beer garden too. Food is a mixed bag. Their Black Bull pie is definitely worth a go(steak pie), very tasty ‘tho their veggies are not always cooked to perfection. Scampi came out nice with a decent serving of chips and tartare sauce; the steak was a real let-down, very tough and you could have used it as a replacement sole for your shoe. We’ve never had time for puddings but they have some ‘proper’ puddings on the menu, like sticky toffee pud and custard. Wide selection of draught beers as you’d expect from a pub in this beautiful part of the country, they also serve a few different alcopops, wine and ciders. Prices aren’t too unreasonable — average £6 for a main course and you do get a plateful of food, no skimping on portions. They also have pool tables and Sky TV’s dotted throughout the bar and dining areas. Nice, relaxed and informal — and no-one looks at you strangely if they suss you’re not a local. Staff are pleasant and it’s an all-round nice pub for a quick drink and a bite to eat.
