This place has been a family favourite of ours for years, and happily the same people are still running it. The Castle Inn has two rooms one with more of a restaurant feel(where B&B guests also have breakfast in the morning) and the incredibly characterful general bar, which has a snug(always popular and hard to nab!), roaring open fires during chilly weather, and board games a plenty to play while you wait for your grub. And this pub serves hearty grub indeed! Gigantic portions are guaranteed I’ve had an enormous meal every time I’ve eaten here. The team offers a great range of meals, and you can tell they’ve made everything from scratch too. Pies are deep and rich, burgers juicy, curries flavoursome. They also do a mean line in salads and Ploughman’s lunches. As well as the food, this is the best place in the village to go for real ales and ciders. They’ve always got a cracking selection on, and not just the usual two or three pumps, more like ten to twenty on offer! The bar staff, even if they change from year to year, appear to know their stuff well which means they must have had excellent training from the guvnor. Outside, there’s a lovely tiered garden to the rear, as well as seating out front, where you’ll also find a giant chess board. Dogs are also welcome.

Just got back from dinner after reading horrendous reviews for practically all the other restaurants in this area of Lulworth. As such, I have to say that our expectations weren’t too high, but we were so hungry we were willing to give it a shot… and I’m so glad we did! The décor may not be that modern or flash, but the food and the service was great. It’s a Friday, so the pub was probably a bit busier than ususal, but it had a nice friendly atmosphere and there were lots of board games to keep us entertained too. We both had the fish pie and rated it very highly. It was full of fish(not sure if local, but tasty nonetheless), and piled high with creamy, cheesy mash — perfect! If you are staying in Lulworth Cove, I recommend this place. It’s slightly further afield(away from the Cove itself), about a 10 min walk along the main road, but definitely worth heading in that direction for. There’s accomodation too, but can’t comment on that as we didn’t stay.
