The Slug and Lettuce

Great location on the Katharine Docks, just a few steps away from the London Bridge. The restaurant overlooked yachts that were decorated with lights for Christmas, which was stunning.
We dined on a Monday, which turned out to be ½ price entrees day. Of course, this meant the place was wall-​to-​wall people. Our waitress, a gal from Italy, was attentive and patient with us. Due to the sale, they were out of several menu items, unfortunately. You would think they would plan for this and keep the popular items over stocked, right?
We started with the Bread and Olives, served with olive oil. A different but tasty appetizer. We then waited quite a while before our entrees arrived. Once they did, they were ok. I had the fish and chips while my husband ordered the «scampi», which in London means fried shrimp. My fish was piping hot but the fries were just lukewarm. Boo!
Perhaps the food is better when they are not so busy.

«Only Vegan/​Vegetarian Restaurant In The Entire Area»
This was the only restaurant in the neighborhood to have an entrée on the menu that a vegan could eat. My vegetarian companion and I stopped at every restaurant along the St. Katherine docks outside of the Tower of London and this was the last stop; after this we would have had to walk on even further outside the area. Luckily, they had Penne Arrabbiata, which seems to be the only vegan entrée on many of the London restaurant menus. I’d ordered Penne Arrabbiata at many restaurants by this point in our trip and none had come with cheese on it, so I didn’t expect this place to be any different, but it was. The dish came with cheese on top even though the menu doesn’t say that it does (the description reads: Penne pasta with spicy tomato sauce and watercress). Fortunately, the cheese was easy to scrape off as it had all melted together. The bread and olives appetizer was very tasty, my Penne was good, too. Only the tomato and mozzarella sandwich fell a bit short, being «just okay.» I had a new drink, to me, called the Bottlegreen Sparkling Presse in Cranberry/​Orange flavor. I had to order it because I didn’t know what a presse was. It was a lot like San Pellegrino flavored sparkling water, and it was very good. We liked the décor and the comfy chairs and the fast, friendly service. The name is kind of weird, though, I mean who wants to eat in a place with Slug in the title? It was so odd, I figured the food had to be pretty good, and it was. Just make sure you ask for no cheese on the pasta dishes if you’re vegan.
