The Gumstool Inn is our special occasion restaurant when we visit our in-laws. Occasionally the service can be a bit inefficient, but on the whole the servers are pleasant and the food is good, although maybe a tad overpriced for what you get. The décor is light and airy and the setting is what I think of when I think quintessential British pub. In the area it is probably one of the places I’ve enjoyed going to the most.

Delicious lunch here. Perfect pub in Tetbury, set in a gorgeous stone hotel off a beautiful country road. Couldn’t have asked for a better day for a drive in the English country with such a delicious meal here to follow. As usual we were fatties and ordered starters as well as mains, but I am soooo glad we did! I started with a Cornish crab salad that was out of this world good and the man got a cheese soufflé as he is a huge sucker for it. Have to say as much as I love cheese I never really love a cheese soufflé… this one however was outstanding! To continue the fat parade he ordered a steak and mushroom pie that was tasty and I had the chicken confit. I have to say this was the best chicken I have ever tasted… It was unbelievably tasty(no doubt thanks to the confit) and also had been wrapped in bacon while slow roasting, it was delicious. The bread sauce and dauphinoise potatoes served alongside could only make this dish even more spectacular and the Bordeaux I had went wonderfully with the meal. Sadly, I was too full to finish the whole thing but according to my man the leftovers the next day were still as delicious(yes, I let him eat it, grrr). Really perfect place to have a meal and the hotel looked nice as well. If you ever find yourself in Tetbury definitely give this place a go.

Part of Calcot Manor, the Gumstool Inn is a bistro rather than a pub and a good one at that. We were quickly shown to our reserved table and the restaurant soon filled up — couples, families and what looked like a couple of informal business meetings. The service was friendly and efficient, drinks were brought and food orders taken. Lovely hot bread and starters included calamari, devilled kidneys and moules mariniere. All were pronounced excellent and the mains were fish and chips, skate, rib eye steak and scallops. We couldn’t manage deserts or coffee so we took a walk around the delightful grounds before heading for home. The bill for four was £123 including a bottle of Torrontes Altosur good value, we thought. It’s on the list for a revisit.
