I love this theatre and visit whenever I can. It’s compact and a lovely local attraction with some great shows. Although one of the downsides is the descent to the basement for the toilets.

The historic St Helens Theatre Royal is a refurbished 700-seat theatre which has a varying year-round programme of drama, dance, opera & musicals. This theatre is located in a perfect spot; just a few minutes’ walk from the train station and bus station, as well as relatively cheap car parks in and around the local area. This theatre is great because of the local support it receives. Inside the theatre it is good, it hasn’t long been refurbished so I can’t complain about the facilities and the furnishings. It features a good variety of shows; generally tribute and local acts and occasionally you’ll notice a ‘big name’ act, but expect the price for a ticket to be more expensive. The seating is ok, but if you’re looking to just see a good show and not be that comfortable then it would be fine. I on the other hand like a good comfy seat to relax on; but then again least you won’t miss to show that way. If you’re going to watch any kind of children show there always tends to be people selling random rubbish at the door; flashy lights, and glow sticks, so if you have a child with you be wary of them as they tend to get a bit in your face. During the shows there is the chance to grab some snacks before the show starts and during the interval; quite reasonably priced too.

Wonderfully located for an out-of-towner like myself, this has remained an impressive venue due to the local support. I like the location as it is a few minutes walk from the railway station, less than a minute from the bus station and very close to a number of relatively cheap car parks. It features a good variety of shows — recently, Queen tribute, classical music and pantomime. This is what a local theatre should be doing plus, very occasionally, a big name(therefore expensive) act. The seating is quite adequate without being too comfortable(I have fallen asleep in some places and missed the show!) and the provision of refreshments good. I would, however, agree with the other review which suggests watching out for the hard sell things for kids.

Always a variety a different shows to suit all ages. You can purchase tickets on line through ticketmaster or you can even phone the theatre and pick them up separately. If your going to watch a children show do beware, as at the doors there is always a variety of children lights and what nots that they are trying to sell saying to the children i bet you would like one. If you want some snacks in the interval you can purchase them here and they are very cheap. The seats are quite comfortable.

Our beautiful theatre was Lady Pilkingtons passion before she died, she raised thousands of pounds to keep it open for the residents of St Helens. We have some wonderful shows on during the course of a year and some great acts. The ballet has just finnished, swan lake, the driffters have just been on and this year panto is Aladdin starring Richard de vere and Schnorbitz. Shawaddywaddy are regulars and Freddie Starr who is a local and Billy Pearce(chase me) Its only a small theatre but it’s being kept alive by local support, great family night out.
