Jade Garden

Been a visitor to Jade Garden for over 10 years and the food and service has always remained impeccable! Great atmosphere and friendly staff would highly recommend to anyone wanting a quiet meal or big celebration. Looking forward to going back again soon!

I have just returned from dining at the Jade Garden in St Albans with a party of 11 friends to celebrate a friends birthday. I am writing this review almost as soon as I am home because I am so disgusted with the service and treatment we received from the staff here. One man in particular, who seemed to be in charge.
We first all ordered drinks and they were brought to us with no problems, however one of the party began to drink his beer from the bottle (not my choice of how to drink but you would have thought it would be up to the person paying for the beer), he was then told of as though he were a petulant child and told to drink out of a glass.
It took them roughly half an hour to take our food order and the man taking the order tried to make us all order from the set menu, rather than the a la carte. Those who did not want the set menu were basically told off and told in a very brash manner that if that’s what we wanted to do we would have to sit and watch others eat their appetisers. We were happy with this but the waiter was clearly annoyed. He came and went from our table for unknown reasons throughout the ordering process. He was generally very rude and even frightened some of the party so much that as the evening went on, some were afraid to order more drinks.
As the food was brought, we were told over and over how confusing it was for them as not all of the party had ordered from the set menu. A drink was spilt all over one person with very little apology and no attempt to make up for the accident.
Finger bowls were brought to the table by a new waiter, one for each person but when we realised there was no room on the table for the final one, we said ‘there is no room, don’t worry, we don’t need this bowl’. It was taken away but then the original waiter (the one who seemed to be in charge) shouted at the new waiter and brought it back, shoved dishes out of the way and when we insisted that we didn’t need it, he shouted again that it was custom to have finger bowls. We said again that there was no need for it and he finally took it away.
The food was really far below par, the majority of it was so bad that we really just had to laugh. When the bill was brought to us more comments were made about the confusion because we didn’t all order from the set menu and he was very irate. We divided the bill between the couples and one couple (myself and my husband) were charged £13.20 too much, when this was questioned, he acted as though it was our mistake and made me get out my calculator and he read out the individual costings to me to enter in. I felt humiliated in front of my friends, he spoke to me as though I were a stupid 4 year old and he was trying to make an example of me. When he realised the mistake he made no apology to me.
So, if you want to be made to feel like you cannot order what you want and cannot consume it in the way you would like. If you would like service from an unfriendly, unsmiling, rude team of people. If you would like to eat in a thoroughly uncomfortable environment and have a stressful dining experience, then by all means visit the Jade Garden in St Albans.

The restaurant is really cosy and has this flair I’d really like about English Chinese Restaurants. The delicious food Cantonese Style was served accompanied by hot plates. Finally I must say it was the most friendly service I ever had in a Chinese restaurant and I am looking forward to come back again.

I have been a customer for the Jade Garden for many years. The owner Kim always make you feel very welcome. The food is excellent, as if you are not sure what to order Kim is always happy to come up with some suggestions. I have been there as a couple, a family group or with a large party of friends and have always had an enjoyable evening.

The Jade Garden is a Chinese restaurant, situated a couple of minutes from the city centre in Lower Dagnaull Street, opposite Argos. There is no car park and limited paid off street parking.
The restaurant has a clean, classical modern look. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The food is excellent, I would recommend the Prawns in Black Bean Sauce. They also offer set meals. All food is at a reasonable cost. Drinks are typical of a Chinese restaurant and not too expensive.
I think they have to keep reasonable costs since they have stiff competition close by.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant for its tranquil, quiet atmosphere, good food and affordability.
