The Royal Coach is yet another relatively pleasant but strangely over priced Shoreham pub. Just the right side of being a «white van pub» the building itself is reminiscent of and airman’s mess from the 1940’s with tall windows looking out across the car park in the direction of the air port and what seems to be an original fire place furnished on one side by and old leather couch. It also has all the mod cons from televisions showing sports coverage to a pool table. There is also a restaurant area and judging by the black boards outside they seem to dish up a good selection of hearty food at reasonable prices provided you are there at the right time. On my last visit there the only thing that I could see letting this place down was the staff. They seemed to be a selection of people who might have been just as at home in a call centre or reading some trashy consumer based magazine. Not that I object to being served by someone who’s reading tastes are not in line with my own, it’s just that a great percentage of what makes for a great pub is the interaction with the staff and for me if it starts to feel a little like mc Donald’s my level of comfort starts to slip away. What I would say though is if you were to hit this place with a group it would probably come into its’ own with the couches and large bar area providing the perfect back drop for a big social scene. It might even help you to not notice the service.
