There is a lovely restaurant called The Walled Garden in the Castle Gardens garden centre. In the old gardeners’ bothy, there are atmospheric old rooms with stone-flagged floors, a sunny conservatory and tables outside in the garden. The waiters and waitresses couldn’t be more helpful and friendly and the kitchen will adapt the menu on request — mashed potatoes instead of new or special off-menu food for toddlers. The food is always good and plentiful; one main course will serve for two not-very-hungry people and the desserts are well worth keeping space for. Access is level and easy, making it a top spot for treating grannies and granddads, but there is also room to move about, so that it is child friendly too. On the downside, service is generally slow, so, if you’re taking toddlers, take a snack and a couple of toys!
