Seaford definitely isn’t in the first division when it comes to seaside resorts: in fact, the former historic Cinque Port is more of a seaside town than a resort, really. Its seafront Esplanade is as low-key as it is possible to get: there are essentially no shops, just a few shelters and a sea wall, with a walkway running at the top of the pebble beach. At one end, is the historic Martello Tower(built in 1803) and views along the dramatic white cliffs towards Cuckmere Haven; the other way leads past flats and bungalows onto Marine Parade, which runs to the suburb of Bishopstone, and has fine views across the bay to Newhaven harbour. Some will find this all immensely tedious, but I rather like its low-key appearance, and the fact that the only facility is likely to be an ice-cream van. My only criticism is that some of the new housing developments effectively turn their back to the sea, presenting a façade of garden walls. What were they thinking?
