I headed to Nutters in Rochdale for my 29th birthday meal, after hearing many good words about this restaurant. It hasn’t just been the food, drink and service that his been so highly spoken of, but the interior and the actual building is said to be breath taking too. As soon as our taxi drove up the long winding path which lead to the set-back old church converted building, I knew that the rumours were true. A grand and lavish entrance, with the staff rushing to take our coats and leading us to a separate bar area for drinks and canapes. We studied the menu and relaxed for fifteen minutes, before we were lead to our table. The menu is what I would call a good all-rounder: something for everyone from roasted duck, pan seared sea-bass, Lancashire Tart and Parma Ham Wrapped Chicken — local favourites but ten times more ‘fancier’ than your average eatery. All five of us ordered different mains, and the decoration of the food when it arrived resembled perfect food art! I was slightly disappointed with the range of deserts, they were possibly a little too fancy and lacked a good selection of traditional cakes. However, the Blueberry pie with ice cream I indulged in tasted lovely, and the cheese board selections were more than generous with portions. Slightly pricey, but you pay for the excellent service, the stunning interior and the quality of the food. Brilliant for occasions!

From the moment you turn into the driveway leading into Nutters you know that you have arrived somewhere special. The winding driveway leads up to a beautiful old building and an ample sized car park. A member of staff greets you on arrival, takes your coat and directs you to the lounge area. Drinks orders are promptly taken whilst you look at the menu. We ordered shortly afterwards and before long we were advised that our table was ready. The waiter showing us to our table also carried out drinks through for us. On arrival at our table we were also offered some iced water. A selection of freshly baked bread was brought. For a starter I had parsnip soup, which could have been really bland, and whilst I did need to add some seasoning it was delicious. My main course was the Limousin of Beef which was served with Yorkshire pudding roast potatoes and veg. It was perfectly cooked and probably the most delicious beef I’ve ever tasted. My dining partner had the seabass which was served with noodles and was also amazingly delicious. For dessert there were only 2 choices. Either a selection of desserts or a selection of cheeses. I had the cheese and my dining partner had the selection of desserts. The waitress who brought them described each one. The cheeses were arranged according to strength getting stronger as you made your way clockwise around the plate. To finish off we had a cafetière between us. The food was amazing. The service was faultless. The venue has a lovely relaxed ambience. Full marks! If anything could be done differently, and I’m really having to nitpick here, I’d prefer the same waiter throughout my meal as we were served by many different people, but this isn’t a big issue at all.

A close friend of mine decided to have her birthday celebration at Nutters with afternoon tea booked for eight of us. This was a ‘dining experience’ I’d never tried before, so was looking forward to what I imagined would be the closest I’d ever get to living upstairs in Downton Abbey. When we arrived we were directed to sit at a table in their front lounge which had its own bar to wait to be seated in the main restaurant. This area’s décor looked more like a city centre wine bar than I was expecting, what with its light-coloured seating, glossy black fireplace and spotlights. And there we sat, seemingly forgotten about. After 15 minutes looking around expecting service I had to walk over to the bar to ask the barman if we could order our drinks. Not a great start. Once drinks were served it wasn’t long before we were all invited to our table which was a large circular one next to some impressive stone arched windows. We ordered more drinks(a mixture of cocktails, soft drinks and of course, pots of tea) and these were followed soon afterwards by three tiered serving trays of sandwiches, pastries and scones with clotted cream and jam. Excluding all drinks except the teas, the price is £15 per person. The majority of the sandwiches were very good, with just a few where the bread had dried up a bit, so that was the only minor issue. The cakes and scones were tasty, and I struggled to restrain myself from eating more than my fair share. All in all, it was a good afternoon, but not amazing, as the initial lack of service and the price of the drinks somewhat dampened the experience. £8.50 for a simple champagne cocktail and £8 for a glass of wine was really pushing acceptability I felt. Tip: their Afternoon Tea menu is available from Tuesdays to Saturdays between 3pm and 5pm. Tip: the ‘Afternoon Tea Experience’ where you also get a glass of House Champagne cocktail and chilled strawberries is £22.50 per person.

If you didn’t now this restaurant was owned by a s’posed celeb chef you wouldn’t be wrong in thinking, as you pulled into the car park and walked through the large wooden doors, that you’re going to eat at a slightly posher chain pub until you see the ridiculously prominent champagne display. The décor is a poor partner to the what, overall, is very nice food. The 80’s wall paper & pelmets jar against the more modern black & chrome bar area & the dark wood gothic revival woodwork, add in the elevator jazz music and we found ourselves giggling for all the wrong reasons whilst reading the menu(much to the disapproval of those on the tables around us!!!). Both the set & al a carte menus offer something for most palette with starters ranging from £5 — 12, mains £13 –35& desserts similarly priced to starters. We decided to choose from the al a carte when we went for lunch, my husbands cauliflour soup was fabulously smooth, but my twice baked souflee starter although nice, lacked the impact the menu promised. My husbands pork main was fabulous, but again although my supreme of chicken was moist & tender the rich gravy lay poorly with the goat cheese/herd accompaniment, which in itself was nice. The stars of the meals were the desserts & the wine, and for me they lifted the meal from okay to lovely. My husbands lemon & vanilla mini puds were envy worthy, but he couldn’t resist pinching the honeycomb shards that surrounded by tartetatin. The service was adequate, but the young wait staff did very little to disprove the typical stereotypes and needed the direction of the VERY mature maître de. For £75 for lunch, for two of us, we have had worse meals but I wouldn’t rush back as the entire package/experience left me wanting.

wow! We were gifted a £50 voucher and decided to spend it last night, June 2011. Contrary to all our expectations, my wife and I had a beyond-belief gorgeous main meal each, with plenty on the plate; a complimentary bread/dip bowl and 2 drinks each, my wife had 2 glasses of house white and I had 2 pints of Beck’s. I had pork: delicious. my wife had duck: again, perfect! And the total Bill? We had change from the Voucher! Do give Nutter’s a try. It’s not too expensive and the food is truly to die for. Ample parking and excellent service. Top recommendation!

This is is a top quality multi award-winning restaurant on the outskirts of Rochdale with an extensive wine list In addition to the normal A la Carte menu they do a Gourmet Menu where you say what you don’t like and then the chef chooses a six small ‘surprise’ courses for the table. Often the desert course of this is a large plate with several small beautifully formed samples. Because the food is freshly cooked from real ingredients they are very good at special requests, for example Gluten free. Fairly expensive, but you get what you pay for, highly recommended for a special occasion.
