Village pubs in beautiful places can be such a disappointment, but this is quite the opposite: a lovely (and historic) village pub, with a traditional interior, good food, good beer, good service, and friendly staff.
The food is all locally sourced, but the menu is honest and straightforward — not fancy gastro-​fare. The beers are also mostly locally sourced, and included Harvey’s «Sussex Best Bitter», Dark Star’s «Hophead», W J King’s «Horsham Best Bitter» and, from further afield (Cornwall), Skinner’s «Betty Stogs».
The pub itself is grade-​II listed building, dating from the 18^th century, and has a nice beer garden. The Cuckmere Community Bus to Berwick railway station stops right outside, it has a large car park (if you must drive) and the pub is just off the South Downs Way. What more perfect place to break your hike than this?
