Formerly ‘Uppercrust’, this sandwich shop has a loyal following, serving lovely sandwiches, rolls, paninis and baguettes with a multitude of different fillings. With a selection of crisps, drinks, cakes and chocolate also available, this is an ideal place to have lunch. With the option to eat in, or takeaway, it caters for all. The café area of Des Amis is extremely pleasant, with a decent amount of seating and tables dotted around the shop, as well as out on the patio area. With a retractable awning, it’s an enjoyable place to go regardless of the weather, although a nicer experience is definitely had during sunnier climates. I personally enjoy a coronation chicken baguette and a flapjack here, although there really is something for everyone to enjoy food-wise. A great little sandwich shop which keeps many a local happy during the lunch-time hours.

Originally I wanted to give this place 2 stars but then I came back on a hot summers say and it was different story. The open shutters/outdoor seating is a godsend and as cheesy as it sounds definitely a place to sit and watch the world go by. It was light, open and really inviting and I started drifting towards the entrance. The food was fine but not impressive it just felt a little bit like it was trying too hard and not really doing it right.

I was sadly disappointed with this little café in Penarth. It’s a definite ‘Meh. I’ve experienced better.’ Although their menu is quite extensive(and a tad confusing), by 2.30pm they didn’t have a whole lot left. I was told with a stoic ‘No’, that there were no more bagels. So I went for a mozzarella and tomato salad. Unfortunately, there was something up with the cheese; I think maybe it had been kept in a fridge with fruit, because it tasted as though strawberry milkshake had been poured over it. Odd, but my friend agreed! The rest of the food was okay. But when I paid, the salad was expensive(more than two drinks and a sandwich combined), which it really was not worth. I was surprised, and probably won’t go back. It’s a shame, because I wanted to like this café. Perhaps just go there for tea and coffee.
