Came here on a Wednesday after making use of the local showcase cinema with Laura. Don’t recall coming here since it changed from the Ashoka Shack. Not really impressed with the new layout. The cook school section dominates the restaurant and makes the«normal» customer seating seem incredibly small. They may sit people at the cook station if it’s busy but it wasquiet when I was there so who knows. I don’t know if the menu has changed in all the Ashoka restaurants or just here but I hated it. I’m a lamb man, I think that there is nothing better at an Indian and that nowhere does lamb as well as an Indian restaurant. The old menu let you pick whatever sauce you wanted and match it with chicken, chicken tikka, lamb prawns and perhaps something else I can’t remember. This was great as you could have the meat you want with the sauce you want. Not so much now, they decide what meat goes with what sauce and it really limits your choice. We had popadoms and spiced onions which were great, a big portion of onions which were very spicy but very nice. Rant out of popadoms before we ran out of onions which never usually happens. We shared haggis pakora and lamb kebab to start. The haggis came in the beucket it was fried in, presentation wise it was really nice and piping hot. The lamb was a bit bland but the raita that accompanied it was delicious and tied the dish together. Mains were buttered chicken and lamb patia. I ate most of the buttered chicken despite my lamb rant above. Both meals were delicious, and contrasted well. The buttered chicken, which I’ve only ever tried tapas style at MI café, was brilliant. Thick, creamy but not sickening. Patia was a much thinner sauce but equally delicious. Plenty of meat in both dishes and accompanied with garlic nan. Just shy of £45.00 though which wasn’t cheap, only two soft drinks added to what’s mentioned above. I usually don’t come here unless I’ve got a two for one and it’s occasions like this that remind me why. Ashoka still remains my Indian restaurant benchmark by which all others are judge. I love the consistency off all the restaurants in the chain. However, I’d be much more inclined to head to the one in Johnstone in future, and make sure I have a voucher while I’m at it.

My latest visit was a bit of a disappointment with delays in service and partially incorrect orders, due to the delays in service it was felt it would be better not to query the mistakes. The food was fresh and tasty as my last visit and if not for the service /order Issues my rating would be better. The cook school units are cleverly hidden under the dining tables so that the restaurant could be transformed into the cool school in the evenings, which is quite a novel idea and the design is such that the do not affect your dining experience during periods that it’s open as a restaurant.
