A fantastic natural(OK manmade lake, natural surroundings!) attraction. Mainly for the fit and healthy but fine if you want to sit around and enjoy the view as well. Car parks expensive(£3 per day?) — frequent visitors should buy a 12 month permit priced at £30. You can add a second car for £5…so do this for your mates and go halves — that way you pay £17.50 for 12 months.

This is a beautiful large man-made reservoir, which takes up a fair chunk of the small but nicely formed county of Rutland. The reservoir has a large number of car parks, meaning that you can work your way around it, stopping off for a walk or whatever else takes your fancy. The reservoir is a nature reserve and regularly has more than 20,000 waterfowl — that’s a lot of birds! The first Osprey chick to fledge in central England for 150 years was hatched in 2001. There are currently projects underway to make more shallow lagoons for these waterfowl(the reservoir itself is unsurprisingly deep). There is a sailing club on the reservoir, and you can hire canoes. There are also lots of fine wooded walks to be had around the perimeter of the reservoir — 25 miles around if you fancy the full circuit. In summer, the appropriately named Rutland Belle will take you on a trip around the reservoir, giving you the opportunity to bask in some leisurely breezes and hear interesting information about how the valley was flooded. The boat departs hourly, and takes about 50 minutes to do its tour. On this trip, you get a good and close up view of Normanton Church, which was saved from the water and now houses a museum. There are cafes and restaurants at various points around the reservoir.

Great well conserved park. This is basically a large man made resevoir, underneath which is a village that was covered over with water when they made the resevoir. Great place for canoing and other water Sports. Many people hire cycles out or bring there own to go around the water, it quite a ride but makes a nice day out. Also great for walks, feeding the ducks, there is also a marina area and in the summer there are boat trips. Food is expensive so better to bring a picnic or packed lunch
