I come here on a fairly regular basis for the nice coffee and very nice baking, I usually get the bakewell tart(I think that’s what it’s called) and it’s very nice, moist, nice big size etc. The shop has a good range of frozen goods and fresh veg, fruit, local produce, preserves etc etc, the usual deli/farmshop fare. There are freshly made savoury tartlets, terrines etc and the like. The shop also has kitchen gifts and a small section of oils, sauces and dried goods. The veg seems fresh daily and looks of a high standard(though I’ve never eaten any). The produce is fine and it’s housed in a well sized shop where you can browse to your hearts content. However, my only criticism(and it’s quite a big one) is the staff. For some reason(with the exception of a lovely Eastern European girl who’s smile lit up my day!) they give me the distinct impression of being a wee bit snooty. I may be imagining it, but when I’m there(usually in my work gear, I’m a gardener), they give the impression of being just a wee tad above themselves. I could put it down to imagination, or a bad day on one or two occasions, but I’ve been there on 6 or 7 now and every time I go I get the same feeling. Still, I’ll keep going as the coffee is pretty good and so are the cakes. I’ll just make sure I’ve got lots of mud on my boots the next time and clump around a lot. :-)

I am a fan of Fenton Barns. It’s a bit of a must-visit on the way to North Berwick, with a lovely little café serving top quality local produce as well as an extensive farm shop(and there’s even a playground outside with a tyre swing — result). The café is the main reason I stop here. It’s quite small and always very, very busy. Because the food is made fresh there’s sometimes a bit of a wait, but it’s worth it as the food is very good. I normally opt for the gardener’s platter — full of cheese, ham, pickle, coleslaw, salad, oatcakes and bread it’s a hearty lunch. Round it off with a cake from the side board of desserts and it’s a pretty lovely way to spend an hour or so. Recommended!

Fenton Barns is a lovely little Farm Shop which has really saved my bacon on a number of occasions by selling produce that I haven’t successfully found anywhere else(frozen gooseberry saviours of my life! Not to mention Jerusalem artichoke supplier to my house!). They also have al ittle café although to be fair, I wasn’t exactly overwhelmed by their offerings, but they do sell a mean takeaway smoked trout pâté sandwich — that, was heavenly. Otherwise, FB tends to sell a lot of similar offerings as other farm shops in the area but given the options, they would definitely compete for top of my current list for having the best range of fresh produce.
