Out of all the restaurants in Chinatown, this was definitely the busiest of them all. They have an amazingly cheap lunch special menu £5.60 for 2 courses. The hot and sour soup was a little different from what I’m used to… probably a little bit more sour. Beef with black bean sauce was really good — beef was really tender. I had a little bit of food envy because other people were ordering dishes that looked much nicer than mine.

The tables full of Chinese should give it away but this is the best Chinese for one-plate lunches/dinners. Steaming noodles, stir-fries, noodle soup, rice soup etc. We get take away from here about once a week and it’s always good. As I’ve traveled China extensively and lived in the USA, I know Chinese food well and with most places in Newcastle delivering a British-Chinese style food which is often too sweet and sour, then this is where I come for comfort food Chinese. Recommened IFYOUCANHANDLEIT Spicy Sesame Chicken which is ridiculously hot. Good roast meats, Salt and Pepper Pork chop, fired noodles, etc.

Easily the best Chinese food in Newcastle. I usually went to the buffets, but this place offered more authentic selections. I would recommend getting a bunch of friends, ordering a bunch of plates and sharing.

A restaurant can be judged in spades by walking in and asking what do you recommend. Here I got the typical english treatment in a very Chinese environment. Not a bad thing at all and the food they gave me was tasty enough Chinese tea is plentifull, muchly welcomed as the lonely contractor in another city. It has that city café feel that calling it dingy would be unfair as it’s clean and well looked after if not the most stylish café ever. A chinese restaurant that serves food to the chinese has to be a good placed to eat with plenty of traditional dishes including chicken feet etc. No alcohol is served here but there are other places for that and I would be more than happy coming here for food on a regular occurance. Careful tho as it’s cash only, so don’t get caught out like I almost did and the pricing was great as well. Highly recommended

Had our first trip to Chinatown Express tonight for a late night meal. What a pleasure! The selection was *incredible*. There were four diners in our party and we had a good variety of foods between us — all the dishes were very nice. I was pleased when the server asked whether or not I wanted my salt & pepper squid spicy(of course I did!). The prices were quite decent and the service very attentive. We’ve been to a few of the other more ‘posh’ Chinese places on Stowell Street and I’m not sure that the others stack up to this joint. Yes, the atmosphere is very much café-style but the quality of food and the selection most definitely make up for the lack of linen napkins and silver cutlery. Will definitely eat there again!

it is a small place that does not look much but it is probably the most popular place for Chinese and Japanese people. it gets very busy so sometimes you have to wait. they do not accept cards or cheques. the set meal is very cheap. The full menu is extensive and varied. the portions are large and well cooked. having been to most of the places in Stowell Street I feel that this offers the finest Chinese food. Note that since I wrote this review two new chefs have arrived. When they cook they give the usual large portions but it arrives very quickly, usually before the drinks. However it lacks flavour. With these chefs the food isn’t as good. This is a shame in my opinion. The best bet is to see how many people are inside, if there aren’t many it may mean the new chefs are there. This is a sad development in what is a great place.

I don’t know why, but I ate a lot of Chinese food during my trip to the UK. Perhaps because I’m Chinese and traveling by myself, I found the cuisine to be some sort of a comfort food… After watching Newcastle and Portsmouth play out to a boring 0 – 0 draw at St. James’, everyone leaves the stadium… right to Chinatown and Chinatown Express’ doorstep. This is the«hole in the wall» restaurant I had been looking for, though Chinatown Express wasn’t really that bad or dirty. It seems like all the other restaurants down the street were fancy ones… the kind Chinese people don’t eat at for the most part. I was able to order in Cantonese, and the guy understood me. I even special ordered it(no bean sprouts) and he understood me… so that made me happy(English is my one and only language, btw). Best of all the server was part of the toon army himself, so another plus. Oh yeah… the food… well it was the best meal I had in Newcastle that week… I don’t give out many 5 stars… but for the super cheap price and the authenticity of the food I shall rate it accordingly.

Excellent food, goodly sized portions and not stupidly expensive. Shame you normally have to wait for a table [though they do do take-out] because its so popular. Coffee not for the faint hearted as its strong — to put it midly.

This is one of the places that the local chinese population tend to eat. It is on the corner and always busy at lunch time. The service is quick and they do vegetarian meals. The food here is quite cheap but tasty. It is not the best chinese resteraunt on stowell street but it is decent for the price
