The Centurion is a absolute classic station bar from the railway glory days! I understand this used to be a first class lounge before it fell derilict. It has been expertly restored to it’s former glory, and features original Victorian tiles and an ornate ceiling. Very good for watching football, with a large screen. The Centurion must be one of the best station bars in the country from an historical point of view. I always try and nip in here for a quick pint before I catch my train.

Traditional English pub in centrum Newcastle train station. Perfect place for late drink if your train is late, or cancel. Sunday’s very busy place but you are always serve with smile. Lots of room and out side pub tables with heaters that you can be on control to easy check when is your next train

Think Mos Eisley cantina meets the Sistene Chapel and that’s the Centurion. That said, it is very well placed if you are catching a train from Newcastle Central.

An interesting one for me… I almost feel bad going with three stars, and as a station bar it probably creaks into four star territory with the high and detailed ceiling interior… it’s hard to not imagine what this place would have been like in the glory days. Adding to the interior is that they have a small pseudo outside seating area that, on the right summer day, is nearly glorious… it’s still covered, but just far away enough from the tracks and open enough that you feel like you’re properly outside even without an actual sky view. It’s also a good place to catch a game on the big screen if that’s what you’re after — they have a big sign about an elevated DJ booth as well, but I’ve never been in at an hour where a DJ is in place so will leave that for someone else to cover! I think for me part of why I’m sticking with three stars is it also feels like a bit of a missed opportunity, remove the ceiling and outside area and this really is just a standard bar that is begging for something a bit different on the drinks side to complement the décor… it’s certainly not a bad bar, and I would choose it over the other alternative at the station every time, but I feel like it relies on the location and interior to sell itself which is a bit of a shame.(The York Tap, in York station, proves that you can have a pub that brings you back for the drink side of things in a station.) All of that said it’s certainly worth popping in here if you have some time to kill at the station, you could do worse and there’s plenty of room for your bags, etc., here’s to hoping they realise their potential and elevate this place to greatness.

So, for years I’ve been drinking in the other station bar, and didn’t realise that this was here. My bad. My utter, utter fail. Because this place is lovely. Decent beer selection, snug bar is lovely, tiled interior with skylight and comfortable seating. We ended up here because Newcastle family picked it, we stayed because we liked it. The reason it’s getting 5 stars though is the staff. So very friendly, and all the points in the world for changing one of the TVs to BBC1& turning up the sound so that we could watch the announcement of the new Doctor. :D

I’m a huge sucker for places with beautiful architecture, and this place is stunning. It’s huge, not just floorspace wise, but like every other reviewer has said, the ceiling is ridiculously high & the walls are lined with gorgeous Victorian tiles. It’s kinda like stepping back in time going inside, or being in a different country. Drinks were average priced and the staff seemed alright, being part of the train station the location is centralized and easy to get to other places from. It wasn’t particularly busy when I went in(about 11pm on a thursday), but I can imagine it getting really busy on a weekend.

This is a great bar attached to central station it has a nice area with seats before you go into the two bar areas where you can hang out and wait for people to arrive. The first bar is in a small area with a few tables and chairs which is a quiet area to chat in. The main area is large with a wide screen tv which shows football. Plenty of seating in different areas. Some of the chairs are pretty high not easy to get up on when your a short lady in a dress. The drinks here arent too cheap and I have never noticed any offers on but it is a good place to start from as easy to get to other bars from here.

Kind of a strange place, where all types collide. The bar itself is great, massive high ceiling and tasteful, almost luxurious decoration. Then you go to the bar and get a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale with a chilled half pint glass(the first thing I had when I got off the train in Newcastle). Always busy Saturday and Sunday evenings, but really good for a quiet drink during the day, when you can really soak up the atmosphere and the surroundings.

They have recently opened up another section in this bar, a sort of snug behind the bar. Even the main section feels like it’s divided into two — the bar, where you’ll usually find business men waiting for their trains; and the floor, where the tables and chairs gather around a stage or screen, depending on the night. Live music is a regular feature here, and the style/quality varies a great deal. The good stuff is brilliant, so it’s always worth a try. The chance of your being pleasanty surprised is quite high. It also boasts the biggest big screen in Newcastle. Apparently. I don’t think it’s the best place in town to watch a match though. More of a music video. The interior is amazing. Even if it’s not particuarly to your taste — and I don’t think it would be how many people would do out their living room, even if their living room was three floors high — it is impressive, Victorian décor.

It’s beautiful atrchitecturally. It was hidden away for many years until a chance discovery while renovation work was being carried out. The glossy, multicoloured Victorian tiles on every surface hark back to an era of palm courts and polite conversation. It has lots of seats as well as a bar area, and the clientel is varied. Some days I have seen Irish bands playing and have had fun, sometimes I have been hassled by over zealous lounge lizards, who have been given their marching orders VERY quickly. I like the place as a stop on a night out rather than a destination, but having been during the day it is a good place for a coffee and a pannini and to admire the décor.

This bar is really in the perfect position, right next to the station, as if you meet someone new to Newcastle off the train, they will be well impressed with a quick drink in here. The interior is gorgeous, high ceilings, intricate detail, and plenty of sofas. It’s so much nicer these days too following the smoking ban, it used to be a bit smoky in there, but it’s great now. It’s always busy too, because of the location. Drinks maybe higher side of average. The local bands are really good, well worth making the effort mid-week.

Perfect for a pre-train pint, a post-train meeting or somewhere a bit different. The interior is what this place is all about. The walls and ceiling are covered in the original tiles which were put in place in 1893. Simply stunning. Wednesday nights see performances from buskers and local live acts. The drinks are very expensive here which is not suprising since it’s the first thirst quencher insight when you step off the train in the central station. The staff are friendly and so are the regulars. A pretty, perfect place for a pricey pint.
