Newcastle is a very small«city» in my humble opinion as a mega city girl from Toronto. It’s very small, and so different from my native Toronto in everyway. One of the few things I like about the UK is the cofeeshop/café culture that we lack in North America. You don’t see Starbucks at every corner, and if you know your coffee or adhere to your tastebuds, you will know that Starbucks coffee is only ‘ok,’ better than some Canadian/US national brand *cough*Tim Hortons* cough * Dunkin Donuts* cough.* Here in the UK, each independently owned café is has its own style and serves really good quality food at a decent price, such as Chalk & Paper. I walk past this café often on my trips to Tesco or Olive Bean or Scrumpy Willow(I will never go here again!), so one day, after a disappointment at Scrumpy, I decided to give this place a shot. I instantly fell in love with their interior design: very mod, dark, with touches of green and wood to make it cozy and an attempt for the café to demonstrate that they pride themselves in healthy, maybe organic, good-for-you meals. I came here for soup, because English weather tends to be cold and wet in January, and to my delight, they had a vegan vegetable soup served with a choice of wheat or white bread. I love cafes when they give you an option to choose. Some cafes automatically give you white bread, and when they do, I try to avoid eating all of it cos white bread is not so good for you. The servers are super nice, they serve your food fast, although you have to get your own utensils from the side. There’s also a discount for student and free wifi! I came back here for breakfast, granola with hot soymilk and berries. Simply amazing. Come here if you want good service, free wifi, good food and drinks at a reasonable cost. If you don’t value any of those, Scrumpy Williow is just down the block.
