Not being an imbiber of alcohol, I rarely go into pubs but I was in search of a good pub with atmosphere to watch the Wales v France rugby world cup semifinal. This is what brought me to Ganleys Irish Bar in Morden. Ganleys do make full play of their Irishness from the bright green décor of the exterior through to theming indoors including various folk music instruments and sign posts to Irish destinations. As it turned out, they also have a strong rugby link with the whole back ceiling being adorned with an impressive array of rugby shirts. It also meant a surfeit of large screen TVs on which to view the match. I was actually a little worried as I couldn’t find any pubs open in Morden when I first arrived but Ganleys opened just in time for the 9am kickoff. Breakfast was available about half an hour after they first opened. They were out of pineapple juice so my J2O set me back £2. The match turned out to be a terrific spectacle even if the Welsh heroic effort came up short. Alain Rolland’s hugely controversial decision to send off the Welsh skipper after 17 minutes and the subsequent reaction in the pub suggests that he had better not set foot in Ganleys should any of us Welsh supporters be around when he does! A nice place for some partisan sports watching!

This is the ONLY pub to drink in in Morden. Seriously… The Others closed down shortly after the smoking ban. Therefore, the youngest of the pubs survives. Ganley’s is ok, it is fake Irish pub and has a mock Irish crowd. There is interest in any sport and they show the lot, football, Rugby, racing, Gaelic games and the food isn’t too bad. The Guinness here is great at two pound forty pence a pint, but the Ruddles wins with me. Its 120 pennies a pint! Perfect to session drink! there is no daylight in this place and the back storage ares was painted into a garden recently for the smoking ban. Always with people in it, but best to visit on Sunday as the Carvery is first rate. You have to love a roast, dont you!
