A fantastic local pub hidden behind the University of Manchester buildings. It is one of those places that you have to know about in order to find it and I suspect most of the locals wish no one ever heard about it! It is a cozy place that doesn’t try to be more than it is. Excellent range of ales on tap and a huge belgian beer selection. I came here with my university class for our end of year drinks and the staff were amazingly kind to give us most of the upstairs bar area. I will definitely try and become a local.

After work at the University our group likes to go out for a social drink or two. The go to place is nearly always Kro on oxford road, which while fine, is often stupidly busy and had become a little too familiar. Enter The Ducie Arms, as recommended by a font of knowledge in our office. Nestled off the beaten path(i.e Oxford Road), behind the University main building is this gem of a traditional pub. A swathe of outdoor seats greeted us, with plenty of spaces for us to bask in the sunshine(Manchester in April, who knew?!). Whilst we didn’t try it, I have been told the food is top notch and the prices looked fantastic to boot. Inside the pub, the décor is traditional and there was an excellent selection of cask ales, scrimpy ciders, bottled beers and your usual selection of spirits. My advice? If you’re looking for somewhere a little bit more traditional in the University district, with a sightly older clientele get yourself along to The Ducie Arms!

The Ducie is hidden away behind the University of Manchester. It has a nice selection of bottled beers from around the world including Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Anchor Steam Beer, cask ales and good lagers(e.g. Peroni) on draught. The landlady is also really lovely and friendly. They do food at lunchtime, mainly burgers and sausages but they’re all very tasty. This is the sister pub of the Bowling Green.
