Was turned away for having the wrong shoes on the 9th of october and was laughed at by the bouncers after coming back 5 minutes later having taken off my jumper and glasses. Apparently i was too drunk by then which i doubt because due to being muslim i have never drunk any alcohol. I saw them let in loads of people with normal looking shoes on and ended up leaving on my own with the rest of my flatmates in the club. Its really hard to say and even harder to prove but i feel these bouncers were racist. They generally seemed like they were up for a fight and they were clearly not letting me in because i wasn’t going to buy any alcohol. I really didn’t expect this kind of thing to happen in this day and age and i wont be coming back.

Boucers on the bok bok and gang colours night were a right pair of cunts. Didn’t let my friend in because he ‘looked drunk’ the sad truth is that he has acute blepharitis and gets that quite a lot so he doesn’t appreciate paying six pounds for a ticket and being turned away by a bunch of monkeys for having an already troublesome medical condition. I tried to tell them but that just got me kicked out. cunts.

Night of attending — SubNature Launch Party, line-up: OD Muzique & ReKreation. On this night the club carried itself as a mini Sankeys, and I beleive it did so in a very accpetable manner! The iron colloms, purple hazed lighting and excesive fog managed to pull off the warehouse party style they were going for. The size of the club can be to it’s advantage or disadvantage; on my visit the room looked ever so slightly TOHUGE for the rather petit crowd. Although this small and spread out nature of the crowd did not discourage the house heads from pumping their fists in an up right motion and the DJ’s produced a wonderful deep house set to keep everyone entertained. Being on King’s Street and all, its a bit out of the way and the club probably need to promote the night a bit better in order to get themselves a few more punters. Drink prices are as expected £3.50 for a can of Red Strip or Vodka and coke and if a student it is adviseable to get on a bottle of 3 littre cidar beforehand. Now. Lets talk about the toilets. Having the toilets cubicles open out onto the balcony that over looks the dance floor is a novel idea, one in which I hope the aritech or building designer got fired for. Having my friend swing the door open whilst still mid flow was an interesting experiance and one I will remeber — maybe use the lavatory before you go in the club and then try not release the seal, as they say. Do — make the extra journey to get to the venue. Dont — trust anyone to hold the toilet door for you.

Forget the review written by the person who thinks he is pete doherty a couple of reviews down from mine. South for me is an excellent club. It does play the old manchester tunes but the club plays them in a sense of celebrations of what the city has acheived over the years. Everyone in there is there for a good time and every one gets drunk and has a smile on their face. It plays all the B-sides which everyone appreciates and loves. The drinks are cheap early on, the only thing wrong is the entrance fee.(£7)

I went on a Thursday night, and the music started out as old groovin’ tunes(like Dr. Dre) and then got more jungle/dubstep as the night went on. The interior looks like an unfinished house, and the place is actually quite small. Everyone in the place was dancing. The smoking/breather area has screens and projectors of avant-garde video. I liked that.

South. Where to start? Basically, South is a consistently popular nightclub filled with dreary Madchester rejects dancing to the same, tired old Madchester records played by a has-been. Of course, if you like listening to the same old records over and over again like The Stone Roses, Joy Division and The Happy Mondays, you’ll love it here. The ubiquitous cans of Red Stripe are on offer at a bar that has nothing on draught(not unusual for a club, but worth pointing out if you want something from a pump) and it can be a bit pricey. Clint Boon(the has-been in question) has a popular night here, playing records he played on and shouting BOOOONARMY over the top to the point where you hope some militant nutjobs actually mistake him for an actual armed forces and declares war on him and his slurry of mooing droogs. If you’re in Manchester and looking for something vibrant and fresh, give this place the swerve. If you want to shuffle around in musical slippers made from the skin of Tony Wilson’s cadaver, then you’ll love it here.

Blooming heck, since when were there nightclubs on King Street, huh? South is often an alternative to the student scene — those who feel a little too old for 5th Ave might find themselves here. But playing a lot of obscure B sides isn’t really appealing to the masses now is it. That’s just making the twelve people in the country who’ve actually heard them feel superior. Still, occasionally you will find yourself having a good night at South, just be sure to avoid the jumped-up guest DJs who are there to make themselves feel very important indeed. You’ll be treated to a lot of indie goodies here, that’s for sure, with many Mancunian stalwarts thrown in for good measure. South is a great option for those not quite ready to move onto the wine bars of the world but aren’t students any more, yet they still want to have a darn good time and thrash around to James and The Charlatans. Do get involved, and remember, you’re only as young as the age at which those artists released those tunes. If that makes sense.

My first time at South was truly decadent. Who needs quirky interiors or trendy scenesters to be at one with the Indie alternative Manchester scene. I must admit I am partial to a basement club setting, I don’t know why but it just does it for me. On the surface it really hasn’t got that much else going for it. It’s dark, dingy got that dirty feel but that’s what makes it cool. It doesn’t care to be superficially in tune, just stick Manchester’s king of radio Clint Boon as the selling point and rev up a following of his Boon army to lure in the crowds, not that it’s in your face like that. Located in the vicinity of the likes of The Venue and 42s, South’s allure is that it doesn’t try hard. South’s dwellers are admittedly older than 18 or even 20. It’s not there to look particularly cool but simply to deliver the Indie anthems to get the liberal dances and shape throwers out. Who needs to look cool when you yourself can be cool because you’re there for the music and the laugh with your mates, that is the new cool. Having said that what’s an indie establishment without the odd trendy. Past guest DJ sets include West Londoner band White Lies(amazing). South’s definitely worth a try if only to make the comparison between the others. It’s «The C word» on a Friday night, drinks offers, fun times. Your indie Friday and Saturday could do with this new transformation, the coined«Boon Weekender.»

I’ve only been to South once and I was with someone older. And even they felt a bit young. Lured there under the pretence that it was ‘just like’ 42s this nightclub does in fact belong to the same indie, manc dancing family tree as other indie clubs in the city, e.g. 5th Av, Venue etc. Its like the kind of cool, older uncle but if I’m honest I don’t know whether I want to start hanging with him just yet. Come to South if you follow Clint Boon’s radio shows religiously and you don’t mind lots of medium tempo indie/Madchester classics to bop and sway to.

Are you an ex 5th Avenue resident? Are you getting on a bit? Are you in no mood to accept it? Are you a bit scared of town and all the young people? Then try South! For all your middle aged needs.

I was in South last week. I had been last year and had a really good time, so my expectations were high. Unfortunately South was a real let-down this time around. We got there early and were queueing outside for around 15 minutes. All fine, except when we got in there was about 20 people inside, which left us wondering why we had been made to queue. I felt drinks were reasonably priced and the dress code seemed to be ‘anything goes’ which was cool. The sole reason why South was a disappointment was the music. I completely agree with the person who said a lot of the music was b-sides. Add to that the appalling quality of the sound system and it seemed more school disco than city centre club. Several tracks kept jumping, DJ Clint Boon played the same Stone Roses’ track TWICE. There was an attempt to mix it up with some ska and reggae that left a lot of the crowd confused and standing still on the dancefloor and the bass was so loud, it drowned out the music and lyrics on most of what he was trying to play. There was a few 90’s ‘Madchester’ hits but most of the music was lesser known tracks. But I think therein lies the appeal — South seemed like a club that attracted the same people every week and they knew and loved the music. If you’re not a Manchester regular and are looking for a cool club to spend a good evening with great music — avoid South.

It’s quite pricey(unless you’re a money’s no object’ type person, in which case, it’s dirt cheap!), but it’s definitely worth it. It helps if you get there early(we’ve been known to get there at 10 which is great cos it feels like ‘the Boon Army’ is playing just for you!) The music’s brilliant.(Lots of ‘Madchester’ and indie stuff, some top old skool dance, with Rolling Stones et al to boot) Definitely a place for the slightly older generation to show that they can still dance the night away!

South is located just off King Street and is an indie/alternative club and its a fantastic place to go if you’re sick of going to places with loads of kids getting too drunk and vomiting on you. South attracts an older, slightly more mature behaving crowd and is a great little club. It can get quite packed so if you like a bit of room when busting your moves, you might want to avoid it. Prices are a tad more expensive than most alternative places but nothing horrific.

South is where you start going when you feel a bit too old for 5th Avenue. A fairly small club, South usually has a fair bit of a queue to get in on a Friday/Saturday night if you get that later than 11ish, although its definitely worth it. The crowd are there to enjoy the music, so you find there are a lot less posers, which gives the place a nice friendly vibe. The only downside for me is the tiny toilets

South Nightclub is more than a club, it is an institution. If you like your Indie/Rock n Roll/Alternative/Madchester and get turned away from 42nd Street/5th Ave for being too old then South is the grown up alternative. Being on the small side getting in to South can be a night maker, or breaker. There is no point rolling up here at 11pm on a Saturday as it can be full come 10pm and no one likes to stand outside being told it’s 1 in 1 out(who ever leaves??). Fridays can be slightly less busy but it is still recommended that you get there early. Clint Boon of Inspiral Carpets fame has been running Clint Boons Disco Rescue on Saturdays for what feels like a lifetime and never fails to impress with his eclectic mix of old and new. Fridays can be subject to change, Dave Haslam is missed! The drinks are cheap and the dance floor is hot and sweaty. The mix of indie kids/trendies and a few odd balls thrown in makes for an interesting and unpretentious night all round.

This is a select club that specialises in the best of indie music new and old. It’s been open for ages and is always full up on weekends. It’s a bit grotty downstairs which adds to its element of the rock indie mood and the beers are cheap. You can buy bottled beer to canned red stripe to feel like you in a band. The DJ change from week to week and so does the style of music, you can have a trip down memory lane through some rude old stuff like ‘buttercup’ to oasis, radio head and today’s latest indie. Dress code is a bit grungy to some of eccentric measure but not too smart if you don’t want to stand out.

I do love South. prob my fave club in manchester as its not full of paraletic students and the drink prices arent half bad either! Castlemaine for £2 a can! The music is grat if you like your classic MADchester, britpop and northern soul thrown in for good measure!

South nightclub is very hit and miss. It plays northern soul, motown, indie and some dance aswell. It has a great atmosphere and can sometimes be busy but sometimes it is very quiet. It is somewhere to go every once in a while but not every week, as the music does not change at all as you will soon found out. And that is the problem. Even going very occasionally you notice that the set list is near enough exactly the same which can get very boring. The djs seem to be stuck in the 1990s, still playing old hacienda music and trying to bring back madchester-which is well and truly buried.

South is a small, city centre, basement club that’s currently open Friday and Saturday nights. Friday nights– ‘Another Planet’- are dj’ed by ex-Hacienda dj Dave Haslam, who plays a mixture of classic and modern indie and soul; Saturday’s ‘Clint Boon’s Disco Rescue’ are overseen, as the title suggests, by local legend Clint Boon who plays mainly indie stuff. The rather steep door charge(between £4 and £7) and bar prices(cheapest drinks are around £2.50) generally keeps the student crowds away, making this the ideal club for slightly older indie fans. The djs really know their stuff, meaning there’s no generic indie tunes and every night is very different from the last, and are open to requests. Great atmosphere and a wicked night out. Get there early to avoid queues and(on especially busy nights) the risk of being turned away.
