Today I met a sandwich I wanted to get a room with. Thank goodness I took it home, because the noises I made when I ate it were embarrassing. I can’t stress enough how wonderful this little sandwich bar is. As soon as I walked in, having heard recommendations, there was a really positive air about the place. It’s so mini, yet the staff move around efficiently and with aplomb, and they joke around with each other like a family, getting the customers involved. I grabbed myself an aubergine special and a rocky road bar. That’s another point, all the cakes are handmade and there are plenty of tasty samosas, bhajis and spring rolls on offer with a rustic yet delicious look to them. In fact I think the only things on site that aren’t handmade are the soft drink cans, crisp packets and chocolate bars. Every sandwich has something great about it. Mine was not mere grilled aubergines with mozzarella like you’d get in your average Caffe Nero. It was a generous portion of aubergine fritters, atop perfectly toasted ciabatta, with sundried tomatoes and a mouthwatering amount of cheese. And cheap? Hell yeah, £3.35 for a meal that filled me up until 10pm? Stunning. And the rocky road bar, while I didn’t quite finish the lot(wrapped up in my fridge for later, I’ll be seeing that bad boy soon) was a delightfully yummy sweet finish to a brilliant lunch. They also offer pizza and salad boxes too in case that snack Gerald Lord Sandwich invented by accident so many years ago isn’t quite what you’re in the mood for. Merv’s is centrally located just off Deansgate, near a lot of office buildings, so be careful around lunchtimes because if word spreads, no doubt this tiny little sandwich gem will soon be bursting at the seams.

Merv’s has got to be one of the best sandwich shops outside of the States, a place where they know how to make a good sandwich. I’m talking about deep fills with a wide choice of sauces and trimmings, where the bread is so fresh crusty… Merv’s is a great substitute! I can’t decide what my favourite sandwich is. I think it’s a close one between N.Y.P.D(pastrami piled high with dill pickle, mustard mayonnaise and granary bloomer) and their hot minty lamb on toasted ciabatta but they do a pretty mean coronation chicken too. Get yourself down to Merv’s, you won’t regret it!
