The Grafton Arms has very recently had a refurb and is now going by the name The Yard @ the Grafton. From the outside it definitely has more curb appeal and it managed to persuade our work crowd(who conveniently work across the road) to pop in for some after work drinks. It’s a Holts pub, so the prices are bound to be reasonable — what we didn’t expect was £2.15 for a pint of draft lager or IPA. The refurb is also definitely aiming at the younger student crowd with £2 unlimited popcorn and lots of craft ales in the fridges. There’s even two rather nice outdoor seating areas, which is where we’ve tend to spend most of our time. The only thing that’s really wrong with the grafton is I guess what was wrong with it before the refurb and that’s some of the clientele it attracts. We did have a little bit of trouble one of the times we were there, but the staff quickly dealt with it and good times were had by all in our party. We’ve still to hit the Thursday pub quiz(with each team getting some free nachos) but I’m sure it won’t be too long before that happens!

Well priced and well placed pub for those escaping the hordes of students round here. This is in the other chorlton, chorlton-upon-medlock, which I tend to forget about now I’m not a student. It’s located on the edge of the MRI grounds so I’m sure has its fair share of hospital staff needing to unwind after a hard shift. I was here for Café Scientifique which has just moved to the Grafton Arms. These are science lectures and debates held on the last Thursday of every month and are usually pretty good. A bottle of Bulmer was £3.60 which seems reasonable. It’s a Holts pub so probably has the usual range of their beers available. I didn’t recognise the ones I saw on tap. They’ve got a pool table in the vault which it seemed the regulars were happy to get back after the talk finished. I saw posters for discos but I’m unable to confirm the quality. The woman serving me was friendly and helpful. Only bad bit was that they still use bars of soap in the loos, yuck. Next time I’ll be back will probably be for Café Scientifique as I don’t drink round here.
