This is by far my favourite place to get fried chicken in all of Manchester. It’s got great prices and the chicken burgers are bigger and tastier than any place I’ve ever been to. In terms of taste it really does taste better than everywhere else. I always get the chicken sandwich but if your into wings then this is the place for you, they are massive and great for a snack or just an extra with your meal. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it, I think I’ll be making a cheeky trip there later on when I’m going for a drink.

Definite student favourite. Cheap-ish prices for good food after a night out on your way back to your halls. Good variety of fast-food, greasy chicken dishes to devour before you stumble back home.

I think one of the highlights of my final year of Uni(last year) was when Chicken King started doing delivery. Oh. My. Days. This probably has a direct correlation with the time I stopped being skinny too, but hey! Piling on a few pounds in exchange for this delightful cuisine is well worth it. Chicken King on first appearance looks like your standard KFC rip off — they even stole KFC’s colour scheme the scoundrels! However unlike many of the other KFC rip-off, Chicken King gives the almighty KFC a run for it’s money. The best thing at Chicken King are the Hot Wings. They are chicken wings in spicy batter then deep fried to a perfect crisp. Not for the calorie counters among us, they are so juicy and greasy and tasty and just like heaven. I could eat them for days and days and days. In fact; my friends and I once set out to do the 50 Hot Wing Challenge, which is as self-explanatory as it sounds. I am ashamed to say I failed, my friend did not though, and for this reason and this reason alone; he is my hero. The Chicken King chips are worth a mention. Thin, crispy and piled with salt they are yummy! Probably the best chips from any take-away in Fallow. For this reason Chicken King is probably worth a visit even if you’re not a chicken fan.

I probably should not have as much genuine love for Chicken King as I do. As it is I feel as much affection towards it as a doting elderly relative. It is probably just nostalgia(the vision of the ghost of the memory of the place seen through a veil of cidery tears) but I genuinely think it is the best takeaway in Fallowfield — It’s open until an ungodly hour; the staff are friendly and the fried chicken is hot, juicy and slides apart in your dried-out, booze-shot mouth. Many is the time friends and I have wandered here late and offering a handful of change requested ‘one chicken king, sir!’ and been presented with a cardboard box of crispy, salty glory. Try the skyscraper burger which is almost exactly like a KFC tower burger except that you can buy it in Fallowfield at quarter to four in the morning and wander home, spilling it all down yourself. They do dinky pots of mayonnaise, ketchup and barbecue sauce and tiny sachets of salt — everything in perfect little portions so that you don’t even have to think about it which is great because at that time of the morning there won’t be much thought involved in anything you’re doing. Long live the Chicken King.

Judging by my glowing review of Abdul’s, how would you imagine another takeaway sitting by it could do well? The answer, my friend, is simple… go for a different market. Ignore those slavering idiots desperate for Donner meat, have the real deal. That’s right, fried chicken. No, it’s not Kentucky Fried. Yes, I know it tastes practically the same. Yes, I know it’s cheaper. Yes, I know the salt content is enough to suck the very moisture from the earth. No, I know it doesn’t differentiate itself at all from the hundreds of other takeaways along Oxford and Wilmslow Road, all using slight variations on the same name. Yeah, about the only thing selling this place is the fact it sells chicken. Not that it’s bad, it just only sells chicken. Reasonably priced, reasonably tasty(at least by student standards). If you happen to be standing in front of both here and Abdul’s in the early hours, struggling to decide which to hand your last few coins over too, I have a simply question to ask you: do you like chicken?
