In Liverpool Street station, on the platform level nearer the high numbered ones. The ship is behind a supportung column, which seems to block the brighter light from getting in, making the place seem a little dingy. They have a selection of magazines and snacks plus of course all the top«best sellers», all at full retail price. However, if you need reading material, this is a great option. Every so often, I see handouts with discounts. So keep your eye out for those.

WH Smith seems to be taking on the baton passed by the floundering ship Woolies, what with its confused collection of products: yes there are the expected ranks of newspapers, mags and books to work through on your train, plane or automobile journey, but now the shops also sell all sorts of foodstuffs and other travel accessories. They also have an annoying system of tempting me to buy silly newspapers just so I can have a 4-kilo Dairy Milk bar for free, and other such pointless offers. Having ranted all that, I suppose I should enjoy WH Smith while I can, as a colleague in the know told me yesterday that it’s parent company is in deep trouble and the brand is not expected not to last beyond next year.

Continuing with the ‘I love stationery shops’ theme, W H Smith has not one but two stores within Liverpool Street Station, both great for picking up a book or periodical before jumping on a train or tube and complete with a good selection of stationery, packing materials and gift cards. Whilst the stationery is a little overpriced, with things like jiffy bags costing at times twice or three times what you’d pay in another stationery shop, WH Smith’s selection of magazines is second to none in this area and the shops are so big that it’s entirely permissible to browse without buying; manna from heaven for cash poor magazine fanatics.
