This one is ok. Decently sized fitness studios, relatively new facilities. Mostly the post-work crowd. Not my favorite location, but considering its central location, it is better than Strand. It is going to be busy when you think a work crowd goes to the gym, rather than, say, Islington, which has lots of house-wife types.

I was a member here for 7 years. Stuff was always broken, the tv screens were rubbish and the sound system was crackly. The staff were friendly face to face but woebetide you if you needed anything that even slightly deviated from company policy. Nobody ever smiles in this gym, so its not a nice place to be.

This Virgin Active, formerly Holmes Place, is just inside the City boundaries. Therefore it’s most crowded on weeknights just after the City boys and girls finish work. The good news is they’re very quick in their workouts, and they clear out by about 6:30 or 7:30 p.m. It’s a good gym, with a pool downstairs, as well as a sauna and a steam room. They update the equipment regularly, and have the full range of equipment you’d expect at this type of facility, e.g., Powerplate and Techogym. There is a full schedule of classes, inlcuding different types of yoga, and V-Cycle Spinning. I’d give them an extra star, but sometimes the evening staff are too eager to start cleaning up and shutting things down while the gym is still open, and that’s doubly annoying when that happens in the shower area.
