Sweet little rustic, urban country kitchen with a great selection of homemade sandwiches and cakes and more…

I just tried this place for the first time and got the bacon, cream cheese, and sun-dried tomato toasty. It was excellent. They also have a unique selection of sauces, some of them quite hot. Service was also very good and I will definitely be going back.

This tiny place appears to be the ground floor of a converted terrace house. It doubles up as a delicatessen and a café. In the latter capacity, it serves food and drink on a sit down and a takeaway basis. There are only 3 or 4 tables in the café area, so seating is very limited. But it’s well worth waiting for a table if you have the time. The cappuccino and the cake are first rate. On a visit earlier today, I was accompanied by a member of my family. He said that his carrot, courgette and ginger cake was the very best he had ever eaten. That’s quite a claim! But, having tried a tiny piece of it myself, I can only agree with that opinion. It was moist and very very tasty. My blueberry cake, while not quite as wonderful as that, was also delicious. Our cappuccinos were excellent too. The service is very friendly and efficient. It’s not cheap here — our bill(for 2 large cappuccinos and 2 servings of cake) came to £11.80. But the prices reflect the quality of the fare on offer. The décor is plain and unfussy. There are a couple of additional tables outside, at the front of the café(on the pavement). They were not in use on my visit because it was much too cold to eat and drink alfresco. But they presumably augment the limited seating capacity when the weather is somewhat better. One thing to note: it’s not obvious from the pavement outside that there is an indoor seating area at Urban Gourmet. The few tables are situated at the rear, and are not visible when you peer in through the window. The info on the sign outside, which says something along the lines of «Come inside for a coffee», does not make it clear that sit down meals and snacks are served. That’s a shame because Urban Gourmet is located in a street that boasts several cafes of above average quality. I imagine therefore that the competition for customers is fierce. Urban Gourmet deserves to be successful — because it’s probably the best of a very good bunch! Do try it!
