Unwined in Tooting is a great little wine bar hidden away in Tooting Market in south London. The wine list changes regularly and they always try to present some interesting wines that you might not find at many other places. I best start this review with a disclaimer: About two years ago or so, I came across«A Great Night In» — they were doing pop-up wine tastings around London. Unfortunately I never managed to go to any of their events, but when I found out that they had launched a Kickstarter campaign to open a permanent shop, I quickly decided to support this idea. By now, they became quite popular with the locals and it can be pretty busy. Since they opened in 2015, I went twice in the evening and both times I discovered new and interesting wines. One time I got to taste one unusual, red sparkling wine. It must have been the 2008 Magpie Estate ‘The Tight Cluster’ Sparkling Shiraz from the Barossa Valley in Australia. Late in the process, they add a bit of fortified wine which gives this sparkling a fascinating, refreshingly fruity note. The other time, I had the 2014 Eschenhof Hölzer ‘Haide’, Roter Veltliner from Wagram in Austria. I often drank Grüner Veltliner before, but never heard of the«red» variation, which seems to be a rare find. Despite the grape being red, it is a white wine. I found it somewhat savoury, if you can say that of a wine. I enjoyed the subtle fruit and nice mineral taste along with a strong distinct flavour. They collaborate with various food pop-ups. This means that there is a constantly changing menu, so you do not have to drink with an empty stomach. Besides a small, well-curated wine list by the glass and a selection of dishes, they also double as a wine shop where they sell a good range of wines by the bottle. I am not too often in the area, but whenever I am around, I try to stop at Unwined in Tooting for a glass or two. If like me, you like to explore new, exciting wines, I can only recommend to check out this lovely wine bar.
