I went here for a pub quiz in the first week of Feb with friends. We decided to get food and I chose a burger from what I thought to be a limited menu. The kitchen is part open and from the moment that each of the member of the group arrived they each had the same complaint about the smoke. The whole bar was filled with a smoke that stung your eyes, kind of like if fat is left in the oven. If the smoke wasn’t bad enough my food was. A stale crumbly role, a bland burger and posh titled chips that turned out to be under cooked. I sent the chips back and to be fair, a bigger portion came back. Still not fully cooked. On the plus side the quiz was quite diverse, but with over 30 teams, it dragged and the quiz master missed about five teams off the results, and wrongly crowned one team winners before having to change. Would I go back? Absolutely not unless I couldn’t get my friends to go elsewhere and then I’d wear old clothes and be sure to get home with time for a shower and some home cooked food.

This pub looks enchanting from the outside, with its fairy lights in the window, but completely boring and more like a sports bar on the inside. Its also much bigger than expected and has extremely high ceilings, which made it a bit … I can only describe it as echo-ey and empty. Staff was nice enough and look of the menu was very promising. It was rather more than I expected for non-specialised pub food but, one gets used to pay £10 for a burger nowadays. Sadly it was a huge disappointment: The burger was very bland. I don’t know how they managed to make it so tasteless. The fries were also limp and not salted. In other pubs with comparable food(like Wetherspoons) I can at least feel grateful that I haven’t spend much money on bad food, but I could not retreat into that comfort at this place. Sad face indeed.

Good food, but astronomically over priced. Could do with being redecorated.

Favoured by many, the Regent doesn’t quite know what it wants to be, Sports Bar, or Gastro Pub? to me it has the looks of a Gastro Pub and the food of a Wetherspoons. To be honest, I don’t see what all the fuss is about, unless you’re football mad, there’s not much going on here. As for the food, I recently tried the steak here, one of the pricier items on the menu and this was average at best. There’s certainly room for improvement on the menu, but most come to drink, not quite in the same league as ‘The Stonhouse’(clapham common) or ‘The Avalon’(clapham south). Would not eat here again unless I had to.

I came here twice for pub quiz. The quiz was hard for me because I am American and I’m not to one remember odd trivia facts. The quiz guy is quite nice. I think there’s a lot of people in the 40s who are probably going to beat you, so that shouldn’t really be your intention. That said, the space is huge and pretty. The food is said to be mediocre by Matt B.‘s friends.

The Regent is a large gastropub located around the corner, despite this I have never eaten there as I only ever go to the pub quiz on a Sunday night. From what I’ve seen the food looks good although it is a little on the pricey side. From a quiz point of view the lighting isn’t that good for such a large venue so looking at the picture round can be difficult. There are a good selection of beers on tap plus they show live sport on big screens so I will probably pay another visit in future.

For a large pub it is very clean, classy, and comfortable. They also really maximize their viewing screens on sports days so it’s hard to have a bad seat in the house(unless you’re right under a projector screen). However, this place is so popular you’ll need to book in advance, which they make very easy for you to do on their website. It seems that if you haven’t booked for game day, you’ll be standing.(They have a very classy, user-friendly website as well.) I also hear it’s a great place to host parties. Although there is no party room, there are some great corners with couches for hosting large groups. I’ve never done it but others have told me it’s a great place for such events. Hmmm…I just read on here that they have Red Stripe on tap, so I must return… and soon!

I miss the Balham Tup, I’m not going to lie. It was a big old lofty space for watching sport, meeting friends and getting some semi-decent pub grub. Now we have the Regent. The Tup went and got all gentrified. Gastro food has replaced the standard fare of old and now you can drink posh beers and practically smell the new paint job. Not bad this place; a bit swanky for where it is and I’m sure there are others like me who thought it was just fine as it was.

From my sole visit, I would have to say that this is a pub of contrasts. First though, the consistent aspects. The beer is uninspiring — all cooking lager, with the exception of Guinness. Drinks prices are steep — £3.70 for a 330ml bottle of lager. Service is glacially slow. Food is, apparently, not too bad(although I didn’t try it myself). As for the contrasting aspects of The Regent, these seem to be based around the venue’s two large rooms. On my visit, the front room was pleasantly lit and furnished, and full of beautiful people. The back room, however, was a diabolical hovel — dark, sweaty, deafeningly loud, crowded to the point of complete immobility, full of rude, braying, elbowing tossers, broken glass on the floor, and so on. I won’t be going back.

Good atmosphere, very friendly staff, Red Stripe on tap, decent gastropub food I went to The Regent to meet some potential(and hopefully future) housemates. I was a fan at first sight as the pub looked cosy yet spacious and was fully decked out in Halloween decorations. Now having spent several of my formative years in the US, Halloween is near and dear to my heart and finding a place that wholeheartedly celebrates it in London is always a good surprise. The second(or is this the third?) point in its favour is the fact it has Red Stripe on tap. Now I know as far as quality goes, Red Stripe is somewhere in the middling range as it’s not as watery and tasteless as say Bud Lite but it doesn’t have the full range of flavour or hoppiness as one comes to expect after drinking British and German beers for the last two years. But drinking this easy downing beer brings back memories of Cool Runnings(which is one of my favourite movies) and the Red Stripe commercials which were hilarious. The pub itself was good for having a chat while still feeling in a happening place. The food was a few steps above typical pub grub but not overwhelmingly fine dining that you needed to go back to the cash point to reload afterwards. I think for 6 of us(5 meals and a couple of drinks apiece) the bill came to about 60 squids. The waitstaff were incredibly friendly and fielded all manner of questions and requests for our table with a dazzling smile. There are several large screen tvs which I imagine would be good for watching a game although while I was there they just played ads for kitchens. They also do special X-factor nights for when the show is on if that’s you thing. Overall, I’ll be back and possibly on a weekly basis if I move to Balham as it has the makings of a local.

Replacing what used to be the Balham Tup, The Regent is nice and spacious. They still show sport, though it seems there is more focus on food and drink, it has turned into a Gastropub. They have table service with super friendly staff and a good varied menu. It is a great place to catch up with a group of friends.
