The Rail View, or The View, as it is now technically known(though you’d be hard pushed to find anyone who doesn’t still call it The Rail View), is a mixed bag of a pub. But, with variety being the spice of life, that’s no bad thing. Until recently, I had never ventured inside, and was quite convinced it would be yellow with smoke stains and filled with stuffed animals. It may well have been, but it underwent a refurb about a year ago, along with the abbreviated name. The insides are a range of reds and browns, with traditional pub furniture laid out around a central bar which serves both the main and public bars. Daytime sees a few of the older regulars in propping up the bar, and a steady food offering of solid pub grub. Later on the age-group lowers, through after-work drinks to teenage-discos at the weekend. The pub has a whole fistful of teams in local competitions — two darts teams, pool, etc, which means there is often something going on in the evening. At the weekend, they lay on live bands, karaōke and fancy dress parties, and manage to create a good welcoming atmosphere for the old and new alike. All in all, it’s very easy to become a regular at The View.
