Stopped in here on our way to the Imperial War Museum. The sandwich board out the front advertising gluten-free food decided it! It’s a local pub(for local people, heh) which gets the odd lot of non-locals like us dropping in on their trip to or from the IWM, according to the landlord, who was a very nice character. There are two rooms, both with a bar and sit-down tables, and the front one with a pool table. The place looks like someone tried to turn it into a disco or wine bar in the late 70s and more recent owners have tried to revert it back to a more traditional pub. The music was heavy on the old-school country and western, 70s pop-rock like Elikie Brooks, Irish bands, and Elvis Presley. Apparently the landlord’s wife is gluten and lactose intolerant, and so they offer a proper gluten and dairy-free menu, and understand about avoiding cross-contamination, unlike many places where you take your chances with breadcrumbs getting in your food in the kitchen. I ordered a gluten-free burger and my boyfriend ordered gluten-free bangers and mash(with gluten-free gravy). The portions were large, fresh and tasty, and the gluten-free bun wrapped around my burger was actually fairly nice. Didn’t really look at what ales they had on tap, since we can’t drink any anyway, but they had Bulmers pear cider, Magners, and Strongbow ciders. So it’s not the flashest place in town, but quiet locals, a pleasant landlord, and good gluten-free pub food makes it a much better place than most.
