This shop is based on the Monocle magazine, owned and founded by Tyler Brûlé The first ever Monocle magazine, was published back in March 2007 Their UK Head Office/HQ is located in Midori House, at No. 1 Dorset Street, Marylebone,(just off Baker Street) which is literally only just five minutes walk from the actual Monocle shop. The Monocle shop itself deals mostly with exclusive goods, of which all of them are in collaboration for the Monocle magazine. Monocle also have other branch stores in New York, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Geneva, Toronto and Osaka. All the items in the Monocle store are designed by Monocle for the Monocle fans and readers. More importantly, the first ever Monocle magazine issue is signed by the Monocle owner, The leather goods here at Monocle are highly recommended. Monocle also has stocked and sold leather goods from Ettinger, Brooklyn, Ganzo, Valextra, and Tod’s and other extremely upscale brand names. Monocle also stock totally upscale stationary, often made in Germany and sometimes Japan, the quality of their stationary is very hard-to-find. Monocle also do exclusive products and the Monocle shop of Marylebone is seriously worth visiting and looking into. I find the Monocle shop, a true hidden gem with loads and loads of limited edition things, that you cannot find elsewhere in London. Customers who buy from the Monocle shop, also buy from Trunk Clothiers, another menswear outfitters, based in No. 8 Chiltern Street. The current retail manager of both, the Monocle stores in London, is Ian Hammond and I find him a very pleasant person to talk to.

Monocle is a broad spectrum magazine about art, culture, design and politics with a decidedly global slant. It is edited by Wallpaper* founder Tyler Brûlé and it believes that design matters and has an impact on all facets of endeavor. Monocle is at the same time robust and filled with easily digestible vignettes. It is also quite elitist and aspirational in the sense that it talks a lot about out of reach objects its readers can likely not afford(but love to gaze upon nonetheless.) Not dissimilar to many a high fashion rag, in that regard… This Lilliputian shop in London’s swank Marylebone neighborhood has every back issue of Monocle and a carefully edited selection of items from only the most design-forward corners of the world: British swim trunks from Orlebar Brown, Japanese candles from Comme des Garçons, Milanese leather goods from Valextra. When buying a gift for a Monocle enthusiast, take note of the careful(and gorgeous) wrapping done by the sales clerk who is dressed as though he might’ve just stepped out of issue 27. What the Monocle Shop IS: something of a Mecca for Monocle readers and one that allows them to momentarily experience in real life the luxury depicted in the magazine. What the Monocle Shop ISNOT: very interesting to shoppers who’ve never read Monocle.

It’s a shop. For a magazine. About as big as a loo. It sells magazines. And, erm, some other design pfaff. But not much. As it is big as a loo. Go to Libertys instead.

This is a tiny shop for Monocle Magazine. They sell back-issues of the magazine, a range of travel bags made by Porter in Japan, some scented candles and a few other bits and pieces. Depending on your point of view, these are either ‘carefully curated gems’ or ‘random junk’(pretty notepads, scarves, CDs). Worth popping in if you’re in the area(and Marylebone is a lovely area full of wonderful and unique shops), but if you make a special pilgrimage to see Tyler Brule’s shop you may be disappointed…
