The Grand at Trafalgar Square

We got a wonderful deal on 3 nights at The Grand. We had really high expectations and was super excited for the great location of the hotel. We arrived in later than we expected and was helped pretty quickly. We took the elevator up to our floor, but upon entering our room we were greeted with a strong smell of smoke. Turns out that when booking you have to specify that you want a non-​smoking room, we booked through a third party company so that was never an option. They told us there were no other rooms available but if we could leave for at least 45 min then they could put a purifier in the room. The problem was that it was almost midnight so we ended up strolling the streets until 1amish which was exactly the plan after taking a long flight and coach ride into London. The next morning we got a call that there was another room available and that our luggage could be moved to the other room once we left. So we went out and came back late and went to get new keys. We went up to the room, the problem was that the luggage in the room wasn’t ours! So we went back again, got new keys and finally went into our room. It was better and smoke free. So after another late night exploring we wanted to shower before heading to Kings Cross to catch our train. I turned the shower on to warm up, within minutes the shower pan had overflowed and was spilling over the floor. Thank goodness there was a pile of used towels on the floor which mopped up most of the water, but it was just another problem we found with this supposed 4 star hotel. I was so tired of dealing with the front desk staff at this point that we just troubleshooted the situation, pulled up the drain cover and dissembled the clog and voila, it worked again. Our last experience was luggage concierge, and it was free and a very smooth transition. We checked out and left our luggage for roughly 3 hours with no problems. Overall I wouldn’t call it a 4 star experience but the location was totally worth putting up with all the problems, it was perfect for our tourism needs.

Most importantly, the location is incredibly convenient. It’s a five minute walk to the National Gallery, tube station, about 10 minutes to Leicester square, and really close to theaters and restaurants. The staff is friendly and professional, and the lounge area upstairs is really spacious. They also provide free filtered water and water bottles, which we really appreciated. The room itself was more spacious than most other rooms I’ve stayed in London, and the bed was really comfortable. The bathroom was small but really well designed, and it had a great hair dryer! The shower was roomy and had great water pressure. There was a small closet and dresser with two drawers, handy for unpacking our clothes. Although it was in a busy street, the room was quiet and warm. We would definitely stay here again!

The BF is in London for work (: weeps :) and he spent a few weeks at The Grand at Trafalgar Square and I visited and stayed in the hotel for 10 days. Overall, it is a good hotel for the price point and location, but by no means trendy, modern and/​or luxurious.
Pluses:
Centrally located. The hotel is in a really great location, not only for the typical tourist attractions, but also close to Covent Garden, Soho, Chinatown (locations with great restaurants) are all in relatively close walking distance (by the standards of someone who lives in a walking city). There is a Tube station nearby to allow for access to other locations.
Extended Stay Convenient Amenities. Our room was equipped with a refrigerator and microwave. Guests also have access to a decent sized gym and also a washer and dryer.
Minuses.
Insufficient Natural Light. Our room was extremely dark. The window was very tiny and the available lightening in the room didn’t do much. I felt like I was in a cave.
Extremely Uncomfortable Bed. I mean really. I had to sleep on top of the comforter and three pillows to even be mildly comfortable. It was literally the hardest bed I had ever slept on my entire life. The carpeted floor was perhaps more comfortable. My boyfriend has a bad back and loved every minute of it, but for me it was very bad, almost unbearable and the pain carried into the day and my walks throughout the city.
Awesome Hotel Bar. We didn’t eat in the hotel (thank goodness), but the hotel bar is nice and appears to attract non-​guests. There is a two-​for one drink special most evenings during the week. The cocktail menu was solid and the drinks tasty.
Bonus: The Grand gets three-​stars in part because I had cupcakes delivered to my BF for his birthday and guest services stored them in the refrigerator and left a note instructing him that there was something in the refrigerator. Awesome help in executing a small birthday surprise.
Would I stay here again? Probably not, unless other places in the relative area were ridiculously expensive or the stay would be free with points or something. I’m just way too picky. But if you’re looking for a solid, non-​luxurious hotel, go for it.

This is really a great value for money. the location is really great. So easy to get anywhere and yet also very quiet at night. Slept with the window open every night and noise was never an issue. I spent 8 nights here and will absolutely stay here the next time I am in London. The rooms were much bigger than I would have imagined and well maintained. The place is also very clean. The staff were also very nice, friendly and helpful. The wifi is free for multiple devices and also the speed is good. My only complaint was they did not have a safe in the room. I would really give this 4.5 stars!

Lucky me, I was fortunate to accompany my current boyfriend to London in February 2013 and we stayed at this hotel for part of our trip. Having been to London several times before I found this hotel more than adequate. Fancy even.
— The location is terrific, quite close to the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery, several bus and Tube lines and Trafalgar Square.
— The free, filtered water on each floor, you can refill the bottles on your way out the door in the mornings.
–The free internet access and business area above the lobby.
–The included breakfast in the mornings in the lobby cocktail lounge. Tasty tea in the afternoons as well.
It’s also close to a few quick stop shops where you can grab a inexpensive sandwich to pack in your bag while sightseeing.
We got a handicapped room (by chance) so perhaps it was larger than usual to allow for wheelchairs but the ceilings in our room were high and it felt very spacious. The only drawback I’d say was that the handicapped shower leaked on the floor so we blew through towels fast sopping up the shower overflow.
There was that one night where the fire alarm went off and we sat in the lobby for about 20 minutes since it was brutally loud in our room, but that’s one of those things you just have to deal with while traveling now and then. Not the hotel’s «fault».

Hotel war Ok, hat zum Glück aber die Company bezahlt, denn fast 170 £ für eine Nacht war es eigentlich nicht wert. Jedoch ist das in London ja auch eine Kunst, ein bezahlbares Hotel zu finden. Das Zimmer war sauber und der Service freundlich. Keine deutschen Programme im TV falls das für jemand wichtig ist. Also soweit alles gut. Habe auch sehr gut geschlafen.
Aber natürlich unglaublich gut gelegen. Trafalgar Square und Big Ben, sowie Downing Street 10 um die Ecke. Gegenüber ist ein Pub the Sherlock Holmes der sehr nett ist und mir auch von einem Londoner empfohlen wurde. Falls man das Hotel zu einem akzeptablen Preis buchen kann, dann sollte man das ruhig machen.

I flew into London a day early before heading up to Cambridge for the week for work. I wanted a good nights rest, as I generally suffer from bad jet lag. This hotel was great!
I rarely reserve hotels through Orbitz, but, couldn’t resist when I found a great deal for this hotel. I had a nicely sized corner room, with a very cozy bed. It’s a bit noisy outside which is expected based on the location, but nothing to worrisome (just some vehicles).
The staff was efficient and competent. I had dinner in the hotel restaurant and had nice conversation with the bartender and other staff members. The food was forgettable, but, I had a nice wine by the glass. The music was good (down tempo/​cool covers of pop songs) and the décor was modern and cool.
The location was great. I took a nap upon arriving (They allowed me to check in early, which was great since I was so tired) and after napping I took a casual walk down to Westminister Abbey and the National Gallery.
Oh, they also have a purified water machine in the hallway, which was nice. And free wifi.
The hotel is very nice though, and I’d surely stay again.

Its guaranteed that there is always something happening here, summer open air music festivals, demonstrations, or simply the backdrop for some pavement artistes all overseen by Nelson on his column!

I love Trafalgar Square: so much happens here!

Now all sorts of wonderful events are held here: St

as is the National (Art) Gallery. Leicester Square,
marvellous Chinatown & the Houses of Parliament are
all minutes away too

I really really like Trafalger Square. Everytime I’m in London, I go to TS.

I love this landmark. There is nothing to do there as such, but you will always find something interesting going on. Don’t stare at Nelson too long, you will fall over. Great place in summer and a must see for tourist.

Having worked just down the road in Whitehall I used to really enjoy walking up to Trafalgar Square and chilling out (yes it is possible), whilst eating my lunch.
There is always so much happening there, so many events to tickle your fancy, from mini pop concerts, big screens to watch the football on to smaller cultural events where you can try food from all around the world.
It can be a real pain in the A**E when the place is overrun with protestors or motorcyclists clogging up the road demanding to use the bus lanes but that aside its a really great place to visit, especially in the summer months when the weather gets really hot.
And if the weather should turn a little bit nasty whilst you are there then on your doorstep you have the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery is just around the corner.
Pay the place a visit and pay homage to Nelson himself ;0) !!!

Despite being full of tourists, I’ve always liked Trafalgar Square. Granted I’ll avoid it at any time there’s a festival or protest on, but when I’m going into town, I make a point of walking through, even though it adds five minutes on to my journey. It’s especially pretty at night — the National Gallery is all lit up, the fountains look pretty from street lights.
Every so often you’ll get a cool exhibition (the Lomography one a couple of years back was a highlight) but even without that, there’s always something to do. Whether it’s just popping to the café in the gallery, or staring up at the people on the fourth plinth. The lions around Nelson’s column remind me of home too — there’s a copycat statue in Shrewsbury. Wonder if there are any more around the country?
And here’s the thing: It’s big. Which means it might be full of tourists, but you can still sit and eat your sandwiches in peace.

I’ll admit that I was scared when I made this reservation. When looking at the prices of competitive hotels in the area I thought a hotel so inexpensive would surely be old, run down, etc. I could not have been more wrong.
This review isn’t just a hotel for the value either. There are four things I would like to highlight.
1. The location. Smack dab in Trafalgar Square and right near tons of attractions! A short walk to Big Ben, The London Eye, Buckingham Palace (where I just came back from), The National Gallery is a two minute walk away. Everything else is reachable a bit longer walk or via the Tube which is itself just a block away.
2. The lobby. Very nice. It reminds me of what Americans think Europe should look like.
3. The rooms. The rooms are basic, not large but not tiny. They are neat, clean, offer free wired and wireless internet. Definitely enough space for two in these rooms (although I think there might be smaller rooms as well). As one person I was fine.
4. The price. Much less than nearby hotels.
So, don’t let the reasonable price (even for our beleaguered American Dollar) concern you. Book this hotel. It’s not the lap of luxury but if you don’t need a lavish suite it will more than meet your needs.

As a relatively new Londoner there have been times I’ve found it difficult to settle in here. It’s huge, it’s busy, your friends are sometimes a million miles away.

If I’m at a loss of things to do, or feeling a bit down in the dumps, this is one of the places I go. A cliché indeed but realising you’re a part of a city that so many people flock to from around the world is pretty cool. A good hour sitting and looking up at the buildings, watching people go by, attempting to climb the lions around Nelson’s Column and I’m sucked back into the mad whirlpool that is London town, ready for the next adventure.

Am besten erreicht man ihn zu Fuss vom Piccadilly Circus, oder über the Mall vom Buckingham Palace kommend.
Setzt euch einfach mal an den Springbrunnen und genießt die Aussicht auf die National Gallery, die Granitsäule und die Bronzelöwen.
Mit der Linie 15 kann man hier traditionell über St. Paul’s zum Tower fahren.

2. Versuch
Ich war schon am trafalgar square, Das liegt zwar schon einige Jahre zurück, aber deshalb existiert der Platz nach wie vor und wurde nicht virtualisiert.
Die Tauben sind nicht weniger geworden, eher mehr. Sind es so viele wie am Markusplatz, weniger, mehr ?
Der Platz ist jedenfalls zur Zeit nicht nur um Tauben, sondern eine Attraktion reicher:
Auf dem vierten Denkmalsockel, also dem, für den das Geld für ein Reiterstandbild damals nicht gereicht hatte, findet derzeit die interessante Performance oneandother (
) statt.

Ach ja, der Brunnen in der Mitte ist nachts beleuchtet und der trafalgar square eignet sich als meeting point.

Wer ein zentral gelegenes Hotel sucht, dass nicht ganz so teuer, aber dennoch sauber und modern eingerichtet ist? Dann nehmt das The Grand at Trafalgar Square. Scheint gerade modernisiert worden sein, liegt wirklich direkt am Trafalgar Square und ist mit der U-​Bahn gut zu erreichen. Für Internet-​Junkies: Es gibt kostenloses W-​Lan. Dafür aber derzeit kein Frühstück, weil die gerade umbauen. Aber in dieser zentralen Lage findet man überall was zu essen.

I spent four nights at The Grand during my trip to London. The hotel itself is nice. It’s clean and simple. The room had a comfortable bed, a decent TV and free wired Internet. Additionally, the hotel had a computer for guests to use, complete with a printer, in the lounge area, which was useful for printing tickets or ticket confirmations for nearby tourist attractions.
Perhaps the best thing about this hotel is the location. You’re literally within a minute’s walk to Trafalgar square, about 10 minutes across the River Thames to the London Eye, and only 5 minutes walk to either the Charing Cross or Embankment Underground stops.
The one major downfall for me was that breakfast was not included in the price of the hotel. Breakfast is offered at the adjacent restaurant, Obika Mozzarella Bar. It’s a simple breakfast consisting of a choice of cereals, pastries, toast and coffee or tea. The problem is that it cost £12 per person, which you won’t find out until you’ve already sat down with your breakfast.
Overall, I’d recommend The Grand if you have a little extra money to spend on a decent hotel, you want to be in Central London, and you don’t mind venturing out for less expensive breakfasts.

Trafalgar Square ist ein symbolischer Zeichen Londons. Es ist ein riesen Platz mit einem Brunnen un der Mitte. Viele Leute nutzen es als Treffpunkt vor dem Ausgehen. Da gibt es immer Menschen und alle machen Fotos und freuen sich. Der Brunnen ist sehr groß und abends ist wunderschön beleuchtet.
Der Lokation ist auch perfekt. Man kann ruhig hier sein London Tour anfangen. Es befindet sich vor der National Art Gallery und auch 20 min vom Buckingham Palast und 20 min vom Downning Street 10 entfernt.

Zu einem der meistbesuchtesten Plätze Londons dürfte der Trafalgar Square gehören, stellt er doch den Mittelpunkt der Hauptstadt dar.
Der Platz wurde einst anlässlich des Sieges Amiral Nelsons über Napoleon in der Schlacht bei Trafalgar von Sir Charles Barry erbaut. Deshalb schmückt ihn auch heute ein 55m hoher Turm (55m ist nicht willkürlich gewählt, denn soch hoch war auch der Mast des Flagschiffes von Nelson), das Denkmal Lord Nelsons.
Neben der Statue befindet sich noch ein Brunnen.
An Silvester findet jährlich am Trafalgar Square ein großes Feuerwerk statt.

A Quite Interesting fact to start of with: The Lions on the base of Nelsons Column are made of melted French Cannons from the Battle of Trafalgar (hence Trafalgar Square.)
Trafalgar Square is must visit location for anyone touring London. there are many iconic things in and nearby including a plinth on which the TV Show Top Gear tried to put a car on, Nelson’s Column, The Cannon Lions, The Fountains and of course the pigeons (which it is illegal to feed now.)
There were also giant screens erected there to watchthe Olympics on.

I distinctly remember the first time i went to trafalgar square when i was about 9 years old. I was much smaller then and the square itself much bigger. Although the impressive statues and the architecture of the surrounding buildings still make my nostrils flare, I wish they would make it bigger again
On a further note, it looks to me from his stance and facial expression, that Nelson is about to jump. If I had just won a massive sea battle, I would prefer my statue to look rather more jolly. 3 stars.

Sa dépouille fut ramenée dans un tonneau d’eau de vie pour la conservation. Berk ! En tous cas, la pilée que les anglais flanquèrent à la flotte de Napoléon suffirent à faire renoncer le petit caporal à tout espoir de conquête du Royaume-​Uni.
Pour les joueurs de fléchettes: un score de 111 est appelé un nelson en référence à l’amiral qui s’était illustré dans de nombreuses batailles si bien qu’il né lui restait, selon la légende, qu’un bras, un œil et un testicule :-)

Of course, if you are a tourist, you are practically obliged to go look at this place. And wonder if someone read the instructions for Nelson’s plinth wrong and made it a hundred times higher than it should have been (joke). It certainly ticks a few boxes. With a tube station at the bottom end, a nice gallery at the top, food outlets around and plenty of big statues of lions etc, it’s an ideal place to meet up and take photos in front of things. The toilets smell like they’ve dabbed the bleach over the pee and let it dry rather than actually mopping it up, but you can’t have everything.
There’s controversy over the addition of modern sculptures taking turns on an empty plinth. You have got to ask ‘if it’s not broke, why fix it?’. Having said that, the armless lady was good, and blended in fine really. I have my doubts about the multi-​coloured thing which is due to replace it. With the whole square being grey stone, and more grey stone, I think it could stick out like a Christmas tree in July.
Anyway as a local I get a little bored with the tourist trail attractions. But I have to admit, this is one grand square. I still find myself stopping and gazing around on every visit.
