Small Tesco where you will find some of your basic essentials and a quick bite to eat. However as it’s so small there are a lot of products you won’t find and your choice is restricted. What I like about this store is that there are quite a few sled service tills, every time I’ve been in I haven’t had I queue which is great. It’s handy if you are looking to pick up something quick and aren’t too bothered by the restricted choice. I have been to plenty of other Tesco’s at lunch an sometimes the number of people and queue is silly. If this one got busy though, I don’t think you would want to be inside.

I want it to be over before it begins. Shopping at this Tesco Express is not enjoyable… in fact, its somewhat unbearable. However, when you need food quickly and don’t feel like venturing out to the larger stores, it’ll do in a pinch. Know exactly what you need going in. Get it. Pay as quickly as possible and leave as quickly as possible. Today I was in and out in 4.5 minutes, and spent 30 quid. Not a bad trip. Be deliberate. The staff is not very friendly and there is approximately 1 security guard per 100SF of the store. It is extremely cramped and there is not time, nor patience to browse. The produce is total crap, except some of the fruit… passable. It’ll do, in a pinch. It’s not a destination. Ps. I need a Tesco card but never want to deal with getting one here because the staff is surly and the store so cramped. Can anyone recommend a better method of obtaining one?

Every Little Helps and I can attest that on some days a little packet of cocktail sausages with a side pot of ketchup does offer me a little help. Ok it’s not gourmet but some days you just want hassle-free food and Tesco Express offers that. The sandwich range is not as vast or as sumptuous as that of an M&S but it’s not too bad and you can also pick up magazines/papers, candles and all manner of other things. When possible, please support your local shop but if you’re in a rush Tesco Expresses are a handy quick stop.

There was a great ‘Shepherds’ store here before Tesco Express moved into Melcombe st, admittedly it could be expensive but did great breads and was very good for pet foods, etc. I used it a lot, nice friendly staff, a good local shop. Tesco express staff are highly pressured from their managers. Sadly one day using the store, I asked to write a cheque as I’d left my bankcard in another shop and had to flag it as missing, the bank said now I’d found the card again that I couldn’t use it electronically but I could use it to guarantee my cheques. So in 2007(a good while ago now) I did, I told the cashier I was writing a chq and not to use it to pay. He ignored me and swiped it, called the manager who had good english but very bad customer service skills. He refused to give me my card back, told me it was stolen, when I said I used the store daily and knew staff who used the library I worked in(locally) he hit the roof and told me not to be stupid. When I called my daughter to say they wouldn’t give me my bank card back, she said that wasn’t legal, and called the police for me! The manager called the police too, I’d suggested he could. The police called the store, I was called downstairs to an empty office by Marlon the manager. The police told me this was an unnecessary waste of their time but that the manager should have given me a receipt for my debit card. He hadn’t given me anything at all. His idea of a receipt was to print off my till receipt. I pointed out this wasn’t a receipt for MYDEBITCARD! He then started screaming at me, inches away from my face. I could smell his breath, his spit hit my face, he called me a stupid timewaster and on leaving his office told me I HADPROBLEMS ‘WOMAN’! I was outraged prior to this I had been stubbornly insistant my card was ‘my card’. I’d paid for my shopping in the end with my platinum Barclaycard. and pointed out the name on it to him. But I’d been polite and hadn’t once shouted or called him anything abusive. This memory of extreme bad practice and appalling customer service has forever tainted the name of Tesco Express! Yes I complained to head office and yes he was moved to another store. He was also given more customer service training! I got my new bankcard a few days later but didn’t go in the shop for months afterwards, preferring to use the excellent friendly grocers(does fruit and veg too) a few doors down the road. I have to say I feel very SORRY for Tesco Express staff, who work really long hours every day and who get very tetchy with customers because of that sad fact.

This is one of the lunch options I have as I work nearby. Given the credit crunch I have tried there a few times. Its just so cramped in there and the queue is huge. Nearby there is Pret, Eat, the usual coffee shops so a lot of competition. Granted the sandwiched in here are cheaper but given the stress of barging people and the queue. It may be better after work when picking up things for home, but for lunch its not good.

minute selection of sandwiches, don’t really stock items you need and some of staff have a bad hygiene problem and are pervy.

It was small and busy late on a Sunday afternoon and a real life saver for a badly prepared parent who’d forgotten to pack any snacks for the long drive home. Instead of having to buy some junk food at a garage shop we picnicked in style with bagels, cheese, salad, fruit juice and flapjacks. I should think it is equally useful for people heading to Regent’s Park and who need to stock up on picnic food.
