St Dunstan’s in the East

This truly is a magical little space in the middle of the City of London — a church destroyed by bombing in the Second World War that is now a beautifully kept garden overlooked by a tower built by Christopher Wren that he considered one of his strongest (and indeed, it survives). The perfect place to eat lunch or rest for a few minutes away from the madness.

Wow, to find such a peaceful realm in the middle of an otherwise ultra modern neighborhood was a real happiness boost! We were totally alone, except for a janitor, during our first visit on a rainy afternoon. We went back another time the day after to enjoy the tranquility once more, blessed by sunbeams on this occasion.
With some imagination it’s easy to picture Tristan or why not the knight of the Flowers, Ser Loras Tyrell, from Game of Thrones resting in the grass next to the remains of the old churchwall covered in ivy.

This place is so beautiful it makes me cry. It’s best discovered as an accident but if you’re going by one day, maybe if you’re going to the Tower of London, come here for a quiet moment.
A 12^th century church that was rebuilt and decayed numerous times over the centuries before finally falling to the Second world war, St Dunstans is now a garden, very well hidden behind office blocks. It’s open from dusk till dawn.

WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE???

St Dunstans, just to the east of the city, between Monument and Tower Hill, is the bombed-​out ruins of a medieval church which has been turned into a surprisingly tranquil spot in the heart of London.
Whilst much of the older part of the church was destroyed by the bombing campaign, the Wren tower, which had been added later, survived, and can still be seen in the gardens. Unlike other sites, the decision was made not to rebuild the church, and today it is a patch of greenery hemmed in by the ruined walls, much beloved by office workers in the area for summer lunches, but St Dunstans has something to offer at any time of year, and any time of day: for a dewy spot to enjoy your early morning coffee, or a crisp wintery breath of air, it gives a welcome break from its towering modern neighbours.

Durch Zufall las ich einen Artikel über diesen kleine Garten im herzen von London.
Es handelt sich hierbei um die Ruine einer alten Kirche. einige Überreste davon, wie zum Beispiel der Kirchturm, sind noch heute zu sehen.
Die im gotischen Stil um 1100 erbaute Kirche wurde während des großen Feuers 1666 fast vollständig zerstört.
Zwischen 1168 und 1671 wurde sie teilweise wieder aufgebaut.
Dreißig Jahre später wurde ein Kirchturm hinzugefügt– niemand geringerer als Sir Christopher Wren (ST. Pauls Cathedral!) hat diesen entworfen.
Während eines furchtbaren Sturms, so eine Anekdote, sei jemand zu Wren gelaufen um ihm mitzuteilen, das etliche der von ihm gebauten Kirchtürme in London vom Einsturz bedroht seien. Nicht aber St. Dunstans! soll Wren geantwortet haben– was sich schließlich auch bestätigt haben soll.
Während des Krieges im Jahre 1941 wurde die Kirche ernsthaft beschädigt und so gut wie ausgebombt. Außer dem von Wren erbauten Turm (!) hat fast keine Mauer den Angriff überstanden.
Im Turm befindet sich heute eine Klinik für Naturheilkunde
Die Corporation of London entschloss sich im Jahre 1967 die Ruinen von ST. Dunstans in einen öffentlichen Garten umzuwandeln, der im Jahre 1971 eröffnet wurde.
Der Garten gewann zahlreiche Preise wie z.B. im Jahre 1976 den Landscape Heritage Award.
So mancher Büro-​Angestellter verbringt hier seine Mittagspause und es ist einfach herrlich ruhig hier! Besonder im Frühling lohnt sich hier ein Besuch, wenn alles grünt und blüht.
