No Improvement We visited this restaurant just after it had re-opened after refurbishment. On that occasion, the food was excellent, but the service was awful. We had booked a table, but on arrival were asked to sit in the bar area, because a large group of conference attendees was due to arrive and would be taking up most of the restaurant. When the attendees eventually arrived, they chose(or were told) to sit in the bar area where we had been put! This time the principal chef, Grant Ferguson, was away and his deputy on duty. We tried the same meal again, braised pig cheeks, herb rolled pork fillet and slow roasted pig belly, but this time it was a disappointment — Grant Ferguson’s touch was missing. The service was just as poor as our previous experience and our waitress, I believe Maria, was a disciplinarian, who one would certainly not wish to upset, especially in another setting where she was in charge. We gave this restaurant a second chance, but I can’t see us giving it a third unless we’re really desperate.

The Kensington/Olympia area is pretty quiet especially after dark so you’re going to have to resort to eating the crickets that you might hear if you want a bite after hours. The Plum Grill at the Hilton Olympia serves international fare 3 times at day, from 6:30am for breakfast and closes at 10pm after dinner. The Bar/Lounge opens from 11am — 1am every day. These two places are practically joined by the hip with a handful of steps between the two. All your bar food is going to come from the Plum Grill’s kitchen. If coming down from your room, there’s a secret door and small hallway that leads you here, so you don’t have to go to the lobby and then ride an escalator up. The atmosphere is pretty chill. I had breakfast here twice(only because it was included), and the lounge area seems like it would be a relaxing place to be at night. You are surrounded by large windows with somewhat of a view, plenty of flatscreens, a long bar and even a special tap handle for the UK’s national drink of Pimm’s & Lemonade The other taps include Staropramen, Beck’s, Boddingtons, Stella, Gaymers, Guinness. Strawberry Mojitos, cocktail of the month, were £5.95. The breakfast from the Plum Grill was your typical British breakfast buffet spread. Pretty standard stuff. I’m easy to please. If you like that blood sausage/kidney stuff, they’ve got it too. Service was good — they smiled, said good morning in their handsome accent, found my name on the breakfast/room list; they took away my empty plates and didn’t steal my stuff when I got up. That’s all you need from the wait staff anyway, right? Bottom line: If you’re comp’d breakfast, eat it. Otherwise, there’s a Costa Coffee right downstairs if you happen to be nearby and need something quick. For lunch, I would imagine the entire city of London can offer endless options to tickle your fancy. If you find yourself in this part of town at night, then this place isn’t a bad place to be for a drink.
